PP-28

Overview

The Champion PP-28 is a door-type pot, pan and utensil washer for commercial kitchens handling bulky cookware and food-service wares. Champion lists a capacity of 25 racks per hour and a wash chamber spacious enough for mixing bowls up to 140 quarts. Its fully automatic wash and rinse cycle uses revolving upper and lower high-pressure spray arms, with a wash time adjustable from 2 to 5 minutes according to the solid wares being washed.

The PP-28 has front-mounted controls and a balanced door system. The machine is offered with front-loading, corner-operation or straight-through-operation arrangements. Its standard construction includes stainless steel from the base to the spray arms, front and side enclosure panels, and an external lift-out refuse basket.

Installation & Requirements

Champion specifies that plumbing and electrical connections be made by qualified workmen observing applicable plumbing, sanitary, safety and electrical codes. The machine specification lists three-phase electrical loads for 208, 240 and 480 volts at 60 Hz; confirm the machine nameplate and ordered configuration for the specific installation. The PP-28 service manual states that its standard motors are three-phase and multi-voltage, with low-voltage connections at 208–230 VAC and high-voltage connections at 460 VAC or 575 VAC only.

The specification sheet shows 1-inch NPT hot-water connections, with water at 180°F and 140°F and flow pressure of 20–22 psi at 82.5 gallons per hour. It calls for a water-hammer arrestor meeting ASSE-1010, supplied by others, in the common water supply line at the service connection. The drain connection is 1-1/2-inch NPT, with a maximum flow of 15 gallons per minute. The vent connection is 6 inches in diameter and is listed at 200 CFM.

Electric boosters require a separate electrical connection. The 40°F-rise electric booster is listed at 27 kW; the 70°F-rise option is 45 kW, with the specification sheet directing installers to consult Champion for its connections and load amps. Steam tank heat and steam booster options require the steam and condensate connections stated in the specifications. Booster placement affects the installation: Champion notes that a built-in booster needs approximately 24 inches of clearance for ease of use and that booster clearance should be confirmed with the factory where indicated. The dimensional drawing also identifies a 12-inch plumbing clearance, 95 inches with doors up and 106 inches for door removal. Dimensions are shown in inches.

Operation

The PP-28 fills automatically and runs a fully automatic wash and rinse cycle. The wash time is adjustable from 2 to 5 minutes according to the wares being cleaned, followed by a 16-second rinse. The specification sheet lists wash water at 150°F and rinse water at 180°F. Upper and lower revolving spray arms deliver the wash action; the arms are interchangeable and provide both wash and rinse functions.

Champion lists a 25-rack-per-hour rating, water use of 3.3 gallons per rack and a maximum-use rate of 82 gallons per hour. The rack options address different loads: the basket rack is for utensils and loose items, the utility rack for large pots and pans, the pan rack for baking pans, and the bake-sheet rack for baking sheets. Troubleshooting

The PP-28 service and parts manual provides these checks for motor problems. Electrical troubleshooting should be performed by qualified service personnel.

• Motor will not run: Check incoming power to the control cabinet, check whether the manual motor starter overload has tripped, and check for power at the motor contactor.
• Motor runs hot or trips the motor-starter overload: Check voltage between L1–L2, L2–L3 and L1–L3 on three-phase power. Measure full-load amps on motor leads L1, L2 and L3 with an amp tester and compare with the rating stamped on the motor nameplate.

Applications

Champion lists the PP-28 for hotels and resorts, casinos, K–12 schools, higher education, healthcare, corrections, food production, catering and bakeries. Its rack format and stated capacity suit kitchens that need to wash pots, pans, utensils, baking sheets and other solid wares. The manufacturer’s specifier statement identifies mixing bowls up to 140 quarts as fitting in the wash chamber.

Options and accessories

Operating arrangements include corner operation, straight-through operation and front-loading operation. Champion also lists a 10-inch shelf for the front-loading arrangement; steam-coil or steam-injector tank heat; stainless steel steam or electric boosters with 40°F- and 70°F-rise options; an optional 1/3 HP exhaust fan; and stainless steel racks measuring 5 × 28 × 28 inches. The listed rack accessories include a basket rack for utensils and loose items, a pan rack for baking pans, a bake-sheet rack for baking sheets, and a utility rack for large pots and pans.
