About the Hobart 625A
Overview
The Hobart 625A is a tabletop hand wrap station for foodservice packaging and other package-wrapping work. It uses PVC stretch wrap film and holds a single roll. The Hobart operation manual lists a film capacity of 12 to 20 inches wide and identifies the 625A as a tabletop unit with a 6 x 15-inch hot plate.
Wrapping is performed by hand: the operator pulls film over the item, cuts it at the heated cutoff rod, folds the film around the package and briefly places the package on the hot plate to seal the bottom. The cutoff rod melts the film on contact. The hot plate is thermostatically controlled.
Key Features
- Single-roll film capacity: Holds one roll of PVC stretch wrap film.
- Film width range: Accommodates film from 12 to 20 inches wide.
- Heated cutoff rod: Cuts film by melting it on contact.
- Hot plate: The 6 x 15-inch plate is used to seal the bottom of a wrapped package.
- Hand-operated wrapping: The operator positions the item, pulls and cuts the film, then folds the film under the package.

Installation & Requirements
The Hobart 625A is a tabletop unit. For operation, the manual instructs the operator to plug in the unit and turn on its power switch. It does not provide a voltage, amperage, plug type, countertop-clearance requirement or ventilation specification for the 625A in the supplied operation instructions.
Before wrapping, allow 10–15 minutes for the cutoff rod and hot plate to reach a stable temperature. The rod and plate become hot during use; the manual warns operators not to touch them. The power switch pilot light should illuminate when the power is on.
Operation
Loading and threading film
- Loosen the wing nuts that secure the upper bearing blocks.
- Rotate the upper bearing blocks so the film shaft can be removed, then lift the shaft out of the bearing blocks.
- Unscrew the movable end cap. Position the fixed end cap so the film roll will be centred on the shaft, and secure it with the pin.
- Slide the film roll onto the shaft with its cardboard core against the fixed end cap. Replace and tighten the movable end cap. If the roll is not centred, reposition the fixed end cap and secure the roll again.
- Place the shaft and roll back onto the lower bearing blocks. For the 625A, the film should unroll from the bottom when pulled. Rotate the upper bearing blocks back into place.
- Raise the station’s top cover, route the film over the top of the vinyl-coated roller, and lower the cover.
- Tighten and adjust the bearing-block wing nuts to set film tension. The manual notes that the preferred drag varies by operator, but enough tension must be maintained for proper film cutting.
Wrapping a package
- Plug in the station, turn on the power switch and allow 10–15 minutes for the cutoff rod and hot plate to stabilize in temperature.
- Place the item to be wrapped on top of the station cover.
- In one continuous motion, pull the film up and over the item, then tuck 2–3 inches of film under the far edge of the package.
- Pick up the package by its sides. Pull it back over the cutoff rod and then down across the rod to cut the film.
- Stretch the film over the sides and fold the excess under the package.
- Place the package briefly on the hot plate to seal the bottom. Adjust the thermostat if the seal needs more or less heat, allowing 10–15 minutes for the temperature to stabilize after an adjustment.
Cleaning & Maintenance
Disconnect electrical power and follow lockout/tagout procedures before cleaning. The manual warns not to hose down the unit and notes that surfaces may remain hot. Clean the wrap station and hot plate cover with a mild dish-soap solution and a clean cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners and cleaners with high chlorine content, which can damage stainless steel surfaces.
Allow the cutoff rod to cool before cleaning it with a non-abrasive pad. Replace the hot plate cover as needed. The manual identifies a missing or worn non-stick cover as a cause of film sticking to the hot plate.
Troubleshooting
- Film sticks to the hot plate: Check whether the non-stick cover is missing or worn, and replace it as needed.
- Package seal is incomplete: Leave the package on the hot plate longer or adjust the thermostat to increase the hot plate temperature. After changing the temperature, allow 10–15 minutes for it to stabilize.
- Holes appear in the bottom of the package: Reduce the time on the hot plate or adjust the thermostat to lower its temperature. Allow 10–15 minutes for the temperature to stabilize after adjustment.
- Hot plate is cold: Check the thermostat setting and increase it if needed. Confirm that the power switch is on, the pilot light is illuminated, and the cord and plug are properly connected to the electrical supply. Allow 10–15 minutes for the plate to stabilize after a thermostat adjustment.
- Cutoff rod is cold: Confirm that the power switch is on and the pilot light is illuminated. Check that the cord and plug are properly connected and check the fuse. Contact a local Hobart service office for repairs or adjustments.
Applications
The 625A suits hand-wrapping tasks at a tabletop workstation where operators need to cover packages with stretch film and seal the underside. The manual’s process—pulling film over an item, cutting it at the heated rod and finishing the package on the hot plate—can be used for individually wrapped food packages or other items that fit the working area. Operators should select film within the model’s stated 12-to-20-inch width capacity.
