About the Hobart 85HMF
Overview
The Hobart 85HMF is a portable filter for commercial fryer compound. Its casters and fold-down stainless steel handle let an operator roll the filter beside a fryer. A 1/3 HP pump circulates hot frying compound at 5.6 gallons per minute, and the 6-foot hose returns the filtered compound to the fryer. The operating manual states that the 85 Series Portable Filter can handle up to 85 pounds of frying compound.
Filtration uses a removable, paperless stainless steel mesh element housed in an envelope assembly inside the filter tank. The filter vessel is made from 16-gauge #304 stainless steel. A 75-watt heater on the intake line is also included. The vessel is not intended to store frying compound: the operating manual instructs users to pump all compound back into the fryer after filtering.
Key Features
- Mobile construction: Fold-down stainless steel handle, rear swivel casters and front wheels.
- Paperless filtration: Removable stainless steel mesh filter element, envelope and hold-down device.
- Pumping: 1/3 HP pump motor rated at 5.6 gallons per minute.
- Intake heating: 75-watt heater on the intake line.
- Hose: 6-foot hose assembly for filling or discarding compound, with a handle identified in the product features.

Installation & Requirements
Before installing, check that the electrical service agrees with the specifications on the rating plate at the bottom front of the filter. The manual says not to proceed if the supply and equipment requirements do not agree, and to contact the dealer or manufacturer. The product sheet specifies a 120-volt, 60-Hz, single-phase supply with cord and plug supplied; other listed electrical options are 208 volts or 220–240 volts, 50/60 Hz, single phase.
The equipment area must be kept free and clear of combustible substances. In Canada, the manual calls for installation in accordance with local codes and CSA C22.1, Canadian Electrical Code, latest edition. The manual warns that electrical and grounding connections must comply with applicable electrical and local codes. The supplied three-prong grounding plug must be connected to a properly grounded three-prong receptacle. Do not remove the grounding prong; if the receptacle is not the proper grounding type, contact an electrician.
When moving the filter to a fryer for filtering, the manual directs the operator to connect the filter cord to an extension cord and plug it into a ground-fault-protected facility wall receptacle. Do not pull the filter by its power cord or oil return hose.
Operation
Prepare the paperless filter
- Insert the paperless filter element into the filter envelope.
- Close the envelope by folding down its latch.
- Place the envelope assembly in the filter tank with its pickup flanges facing up.
- Align the assembly opening evenly over the filter drain and screw on the hold-down device.
- Place the splash screen on the filter tank. The manual identifies this as the completed setup for filtering.
Position and filter
- Use the pull handle to roll the filter to the fryer. Keep clear of the electrical cord and oil return hose when moving it.
- Make sure the filter switch is off. Turn the fryer off, open its door and position the filter next to it.
- Connect the electrical supply as described in the manual, then attach the fill/discard hose by pulling back the female quick-disconnect and fitting it over the male quick-disconnect on the fryer.
- Follow the fryer instructions to warm the compound to 260°F (125°C), then turn the fryer off.
- Check that the filter is positioned correctly and the power cords are connected. For filtering from a cold start, or when the fryer contains solid compound, set the filter switch to HEATER for 10 minutes, then turn the switch off.
- The manual recommends adding 4 ounces (65 grams) of diatomaceous filter compound to the hot oil and stirring gently. The product sheet notes that diatomaceous compound is recommended for thorough cleansing but is not required for filtration.
- Carefully open the fryer drain valve and avoid splashing hot oil. As compound enters the filter tank, carefully loosen crusty sediment around the fryer tank sides with a nylon brush.
- Close the fryer drain valve. If the fryer is in a battery, open only one drain valve at a time. Confirm that the fill/discard hose is connected, then set the toggle switch to PUMP.
- Let the oil flow back into the fryer through the fill/discard hose. When air bubbles appear in the oil, indicating that pumping is complete, turn the filter pump off.
The controls are an OFF–PUMP–HEATER switch and a RESET button. The switch turns the pump or heater on or off. The reset button resets the pump motor thermal overload if the motor overheats. Hot oil and parts can cause burns; the manual cautions operators to use care and not leave filtering unattended. Do not allow water or cleaning solution to enter the mobile filter pump.
Cleaning & Maintenance
Disconnect the electrical power supply and follow lockout/tagout procedures before cleaning or servicing. The filter and its parts can be hot, so use care during operation, cleaning and service.
The paperless filter screen can be cleaned in a dishwasher or placed in the fryer during boil-out. The manual says to use filter powder to protect the screen from the varnishing effect. Any filter powder may be used. Screens used with filter powder will last longer; the manual also states that a screen boiled out or placed in the dishwasher at least once a week will last just as long. Dry the screen thoroughly before using it again.
The filter vessel is not a storage device. Pump all frying compound back into the fryer after filtering. If compound is left in the filter and solidifies, it cannot be pumped back and must be removed by hand. The manual also instructs operators not to let water or cleaning solution enter the pump.
Troubleshooting
If the pump shuts down during filtering, turn the filter switch off and allow the motor to cool for 5 minutes. Then push the motor reset button on the right-hand side of the portable filter. If resetting fails after several tries, check that the filter and fryer power supply cords are connected and check the circuit breakers. For other service needs, the manual advises contacting an authorized service agency in the area. Have the model number, serial number, manufacture date and voltage available when calling for service.
Applications
The 85HMF is used to filter frying compound from a commercial fryer and pump it back into the fryer tank. Its mobile handle and casters let operators move it from fryer to fryer. The operating manual states a capacity of up to 85 pounds of frying compound for the 85 Series Portable Filter. The product specification sheet identifies the appliance as intended for commercial installation, not home use.
