Overview

The Hobart AM16VL-ADV is an electric, high-temperature, ventless door-style dishwasher in Hobart’s AM16 series. It is specified for up to 40 racks per hour and uses a pumped final rinse with a stated consumption of 0.67 U.S. gallons per rack. Its feature set includes drain-water energy recovery, automatic soil removal, a five-sided insulated hood, touchscreen controls, Wi-Fi connectivity and a pumped drain. Hobart specifies a one-year parts-and-labour warranty.

The unit has a pillarless opening and a 17-inch door opening. Its wash arms are revolving, interchangeable X-shaped stainless-steel arms; the upper and lower rinse arms are also revolving and interchangeable. The machine can be installed straight-through or in a corner configuration.

• Water hardness: Hobart recommends 3 grains or less for best results.

Installation & Requirements

Electrical and grounding connections must comply with the applicable electrical code and local requirements. Plumbing connections must comply with applicable sanitary, safety and plumbing codes. Use the electrical rating that corresponds to the machine’s actual supply and connection configuration; the spec sheet lists separate ratings for single-point service and dual-point field conversion.

The common water connection is specified for a minimum incoming water temperature of 55°F and a recommended pressure of 15–65 PSI. Hobart also recommends building flowing water pressure at or above 20 PSI, noting that lower pressure may affect fill and startup times. The machine is a pumped-rinse model, so the spec sheet says a pressure-regulating valve is not necessary on hot or cold lines. A water-hammer arrestor meeting ASSE-1010 or equivalent is to be supplied by others in the common water supply line. For water hardness of 3 grains or more, the supplied Hobart Canada information suggests adding a water softener; the spec sheet recommends 3 grains or less for best results.

The spec sheet describes the dishwasher as ventless, but also notes that a vent hood, if required, must provide a minimum 450 CFM exhaust. It lists approximate heat gain to the space without a vent hood as 3,200 BTU per hour latent and 3,700 BTU per hour sensible. Check the unit’s installation instructions for the applicable site-specific requirements. The machine supports straight-through or corner installation. Optional accessories listed by Hobart include chemical pumps, a corner-installation splash shield, a rapid-fill kit, a water-hammer-arrestor kit, flanged and seismic feet, and an ASR left-hand conversion kit.

Operation

The dishwasher has automatic fill and door-actuated start. The operator closes the door to start a cycle; available timed wash cycles are 1, 2, 4 and 6 minutes. Hobart lists NSF pot-and-pan rating for the 2-, 4- and 6-minute cycles. The displayed status includes wash temperature, and the manual says “Ready” displays when the non-SCB wash tank is above 151°F. The manual also states that the non-SCB tank continues heating to 154°F after the ready indication.

SmartConnect app and cloud functions report machine status and temperature logs, provide error-code reporting, and show cost, consumption and usage analysis. Temperature and chemical lockouts are listed when Hobart chemical pumps are fitted. Chemical pumps themselves are listed as an optional accessory, not a standard feature. The machine also has a door lock, auto delime and AutoClean.

Cleaning & Maintenance

The AM16-series service and parts manual includes the AM16VL-ADV among the covered models. Its maintenance checklist directs operators or service personnel to check the drain unit for leaks and proper drain-pump operation. It also calls for cleaning the tank bottom, standpipe and drain hub, and removing debris from those areas. Clean the wash-tank air-trap port, upper and lower wash arms, strainer basket and strainer pan.

The manual says to keep the wash-tank heater clean and free of soil and lime-scale buildup. If lime scale is excessive, run the delime cycle. Verify that wash-tank temperature meets the minimum requirement shown on the machine data label. The product specification lists auto delime as a standard feature.

For machines fitted with the Hobart chemical-pump system, the manual’s checklist calls for replacing chemical-pump squeeze or pinch tubes (Hobart part number 00-949651-00004), checking connections and fittings for leaks, and checking chemical tubing for kinks, holes and leaks. It also says to keep standpipe strainers clear of debris and ensure standpipes are properly inserted into chemical containers. The checklist calls for checking that the chemical cap is secured and not cracked or broken, with replacement part number 00-562915 noted for SCB models only.

Troubleshooting

The service manual describes a FILL ERROR if the tank or booster does not reach the required ready temperature or water-level set points. The excerpted manual identifies those conditions but does not provide a complete operator-level repair procedure for this error.

For error 090, the displayed message is “Wash Temperature not reached. Drain and restart Machine. If necessary, contact Service technician.” The manual says the error occurs when the minimum wash-tank temperature does not reach 153°F within 20 minutes after “Heating” appears. The wash program is locked; the drain program and power-down remain enabled. To acknowledge the error, the manual says to press and hold the power button for 5 seconds; the machine drains and powers off. Power it back on and try again. If the error recurs, the manual advises contacting a service technician.

The manual’s possible-problem checks for error 090 are the wash-temperature thermistor (QTM1) for damage and tightness; tank-heater current on each leg, wiring and contactor; high limits; damaged wires in the control box; incoming-water temperature; and thermal paste between the thermistor and tank. It notes that dielectric grease may be added to protect a connector if water is getting into it. These are diagnostic checks, not a substitute for qualified service.

Applications

With a maximum stated output of 40 racks per hour, high-temperature sanitizing, a pumped rinse and Hobart’s NSF pot-and-pan rating for the specified cycles, the AM16VL-ADV is suited to commercial dishrooms handling dishware, glassware, pots and pans. Its ventless energy-recovery features may be relevant where a kitchen is assessing dishroom ventilation, subject to the installation requirements and the spec sheet’s note about a vent hood if required.
