About the Scotsman C0522
Overview
The Scotsman C0522 is a Prodigy Plus modular cube ice machine. It makes small or medium cubes and is intended to sit on an ice storage bin or ice dispenser; an adapter may be needed for some installations. The C0522 is not stackable. The machine is available in air-cooled and water-cooled configurations, with electrical requirements varying by model suffix.
Production depends on condenser type and operating conditions. The specification sheet lists air-cooled production of 475 lb (216 kg) per 24 hours with 70°F air and 50°F water, and 340 lb (154 kg) with 90°F air and 70°F water. For water-cooled models, it lists 480 lb (218 kg) at 70°F air and 50°F water, and 409 lb (186 kg) at 90°F air and 70°F water. The product is identified as a 500 lb cube ice machine, but actual stated production varies with these conditions.
Key Features
- AutoAlert indicators: Front-visible status lights communicate operating information and signal when tasks such as descaling and sanitizing are due.
- Service access: The front panel is self-aligning and removable for access to key components. The manual also describes a diagnostic code display.
- Air filter: The reusable air filter is removable from outside the cabinet for cleaning.
- WaterSense purge control: Scotsman describes this adaptive purge control as reducing scale buildup.
- Harvest Assist: The specification sheet lists this feature as helping move cube ice to the bin.
- Optional controls: Vari-Smart ice level control can be added to program bin levels. Smart-Board options provide additional operating data and diagnostic capabilities; a network-capable version is also listed.
- Cube choices: Small cubes measure 7/8 x 7/8 x 3/8 inch; medium cubes measure 7/8 x 7/8 x 7/8 inch.

Installation & Requirements
Location and airflow
The manual specifies indoor installation in a controlled environment. Air-cooled models take in air at the left side and discharge warm air at the back, so the location must allow for intake and exhaust. The manual calls for 6 inches of space at the sides and back for operation. It also recommends 12–18 inches at the left side for good airflow and maximum capacity, and says to keep the machine away from heat-producing appliances and heating ducts. Space above and on both sides is needed for service access; the manual does not give a numerical overhead clearance. Restricted clearance can significantly reduce air-cooled ice capacity.
Water and drains
The air-cooled model has a 3/8-inch FPT potable water inlet and a 3/4-inch FPT drain fitting. The manual recommends 3/8-inch OD supply tubing. Connect the drain to the building drain in accordance with local codes. Use rigid drain tubing, route drain lines separately, and do not tee the machine drain into the bin drain. The reservoir drain should be vented; the manual describes a vertical vent extending about 8–10 inches. Horizontal drain runs need a 1/4-inch fall per foot. Water-cooled configurations have additional condenser water and drain connections; use the connection details for the exact unit.
The manual states that the NSF-listed model has a 1-inch anti-backflow air gap between the water inlet tube end and the highest possible reservoir water level, so a backflow device is not required for the potable water inlet. When water filtration is used, filter the water going to the reservoir, not the condenser. Scotsman recommends water filtration for ice machines.
Electrical
The machine is intended for permanent electrical connection and is not supplied with a power cord. Electrical connections are made in the junction box at the back of the cabinet. The manual recommends a licensed electrician, requires compliance with applicable codes, and states that extension cords are not permitted. Provide the correct supply for the specific model and check the unit dataplate for voltage, minimum circuit ampacity and maximum fuse size. A field-supplied strain relief and ground connection are specified in the manual.
Operation
Front-accessible indicator lights and on-off controls give staff operating information and basic control. The manual identifies On, Off, Harvest and Clean controls. When the machine is operating, pressing Harvest starts a harvest cycle; the machine stops when that cycle is complete. If the display indicates a full bin with “b,” the manual directs the operator to use the Off control when stopping the machine for the described cleaning procedure. AutoAlert lights indicate operating status and signal maintenance needs. Optional Vari-Smart control can be used to program ice levels, while optional Smart-Board equipment provides additional operating data for diagnosis.
The machine is a cuber intended to feed a compatible storage bin or dispenser. The ice storage bin is separate from the modular ice-making head unless supplied as part of an installation package.
Cleaning & Maintenance
The manual places sanitation responsibility on the user and says the ice machine water system should be cleaned and sanitized at least twice per year. Sanitize the storage bin as often as local health codes require and each time the machine is cleaned and sanitized. The manual calls for occasional cleaning of the water system with a chemical made for ice machines to dissolve mineral buildup.
For the manual’s cleaning procedure, remove the front panel and evaporator cover, then clear ice from the bin or dispenser. If the machine is running, use Harvest and allow the cycle to finish; if the bin-full display is active, use Off. Press Clean and allow the reservoir to drain and refill. The manual specifies adding 8 ounces of Scotsman Clear 1 scale remover to the reservoir and circulating it for at least 10 minutes. It then directs the operator through cleaning and sanitizing the water system and removable internal parts, flushing the sanitizer from the water system for at least 20 minutes, replacing the covers and restarting ice making. Follow the complete manual for the full sequence and product-specific handling steps.
For the air-cooled condenser filter, pull the filter forward from the side panel, wash dust and grease from it, and return it to position. The manual says not to operate the machine without the filter except during cleaning. If the machine has been run without its filter, the condenser fins under the fan blades may need cleaning by a refrigeration technician. The manual also recommends replacing used filter cartridges when connecting filtration to a replacement machine.
Applications
The C0522 is suited to commercial kitchens and beverage service where a modular cube ice head can be paired with a compatible bin or dispenser. The specification sheet describes the cube as a common ice form suited to mixed drinks. Choose small or medium cube production according to service needs, and select a matching bin or dispenser arrangement for the installation.
