About the Scotsman DCE33
Overview
The Scotsman DCE33 is a restaurant-type ice machine described in its manual as intended for home use. It produces gourmet clear ice and holds the ice in an insulated storage bin. The Legacy cuber is an indoor unit for a controlled environment, with a 15-inch cabinet width. Its large, slow-melting cubes are intended for beverages; the listed cube size is 1 × 1 × 1¼ inches.
There are gravity-drain and pump-drain configurations in the DCE33 family. A gravity-drain model requires a drain line pitched down from the machine. A pump-drain model uses its built-in pump to move drain water to a suitable drain point. Confirm the specific configuration when selecting a unit, since the drain arrangement affects installation.
Key Features
- Produces up to 30 lb of gourmet ice in 24 hours under the stated 70°F air and 50°F water conditions. Listed production is 16 lb in 24 hours at 90°F air and 70°F water.
- Stores up to 26 lb of ice.
- Automatic shut-off and restart help maintain the bin's ice level.
- Field-reversible door.
- Accepts a custom wood panel to match surrounding cabinetry.
- Aluminum door with a brushed stainless steel finish and matching exposed door frame; stainless steel finish is listed for the DRC033 specification sheet.
- A stainless wrap-around door sleeve with towel-bar handle is listed as an accessory.
- Available with a built-in drain pump, depending on the selected configuration.

Installation & Requirements
Location and airflow
The DCE33 must be installed indoors in a controlled environment. Its fan draws room air through the right side of the front kick plate and discharges warm air through the left side. Keep the kick plate area unobstructed; blocking airflow reduces performance and efficiency. The manual specifies an operating air-temperature range of 50°F to 100°F.
The manual gives an installation space of 15¼ inches wide and 33¾ inches high, with 22 inches of cabinet depth to the front edge of the handle. Allow 1/8 inch at each side of the cabinet. Keep the front of the cabinet accessible at the top and bottom for service. When the machine is installed in a corner, the door swing may be limited by contact between the handle and the wall or cabinet face.
Water, drain and electrical
The machine needs potable water, electricity and a drain. The manual specifies a continuous water supply with at least 20 psig flowing pressure and no more than 80 psig static pressure. Water temperature must be between 40°F and 100°F. A water filter is recommended in the installation diagrams. Water supply tubing is specified as 1/4-inch outside-diameter copper tubing.
For a gravity-drain installation, the drain line must run downhill from the machine. The manual specifies a 1/4-inch-per-foot fall for horizontal drain runs and notes that an air gap may be required by local code. The gravity drain tube is 5/8 inch. Poor drainage can cause ice to melt faster in the bin. For the pump-drain configuration, route the supplied 3/8-inch inside-diameter plastic drain tubing to the drain connection point. The manual cautions not to connect the discharge below a trap and states that pump models can pump water up one story. An air gap may also be required for this arrangement.
Electrical requirements are 115 V, 60 Hz, single phase, with a 15 A maximum fuse size. The machine should be the only device using its circuit. Electrical, water and drain connections must conform to local codes. The manual says a wall outlet directly behind the machine can make an undercounter installation easier, but the plumbing and electrical connections should be planned for the selected drain configuration.
Operation
The DCE33 makes and stores ice automatically. Its bin control stops and restarts production to maintain the ideal bin level. The user manual identifies a control knob with Off and On positions. For cleaning, the manual directs the operator to turn the control to Off before removing the ice, then return it to On as part of the cleaning procedure. The available documentation does not provide a cycle time or a separate daily operating procedure.
Cleaning & Maintenance
The DCE33 manual says regular cleaning helps the machine last longer and advises cleaning at least once a year, preferably twice. Water conditions may require more frequent cleaning of the ice-making section; dust from carpets or pets may call for more frequent condenser cleaning. The five areas identified for cleaning are the cabinet and door, storage bin, condenser, ice-making system and ice scoop.
Ice-making system
- Open the door and turn the control knob to Off.
- Scoop out all ice and discard it or keep it in an ice chest or cooler.
- Pour 4 oz of Scotsman Clear 1 Ice Machine Cleaner into the reservoir.
- Turn the control to On and let the machine operate for about 2 hours.
- Pour hot water at 95°F to 115°F into the bin to melt the ice that has formed.
The supplied manual excerpt does not include the remaining steps of the ice-making-system cleaning procedure, so follow the complete manual for the full process.
Bin, cabinet and condenser
Sanitize the empty bin occasionally, preferably after cleaning the ice-making system. The manual gives a solution of 1 oz of household bleach in 2 gallons of hot water at 95°F to 115°F. Wipe the bin interior with a clean cloth, pour some solution down the drain, and allow the bin to air-dry. Wipe spills from the door and handle; clean dried spills on the door or gasket with soap and warm water.
To clean the condenser, remove the kick plate, locate the condenser surface and vacuum away dust and lint. Do not dent the fins. Replace the kick plate when finished. Do not store items other than ice in the bin: the manual warns that bottles are unsanitary and labels can come loose and plug the drain. It also warns against operating the machine without regular cleaning.
Troubleshooting
- No ice falls into the bin although the machine is operating: Ice may be stuck on the evaporator; the water filter or inlet-valve screen may be restricted; the inlet valve or hot-gas valve may need repair or replacement; harvest time may be too short and require timer adjustment; excessive heat load, a leaking inlet valve or insufficient refrigerant may also be involved.
- No water spray: The manual lists a failed water pump or a leak from the reservoir as possible causes. Replace the pump if it does not work, or locate and repair the reservoir leak.
- Cube-size control will not close: The manual directs the operator to check for excessive heat load or insufficient refrigerant; a defective control may need replacement.
- No airflow: Check whether the fan motor is turning, whether the fan blade is broken, and whether the condenser is blocked. The manual lists fan replacement or condenser cleaning as possible corrections.
- Standing water in the bin: A restricted drain line or drain-pump maintenance issue may be responsible. Remove the restriction or contact a service provider to check pump operation.
Applications
The DCE33 suits indoor undercounter installations where a compact supply of clear, slow-melting beverage ice is useful, such as a home entertaining area or a small food-service setting. Its stated production and storage capacities help buyers compare the unit with their expected ice use. Check the available space, airflow path, water connection and drain route before choosing a gravity-drain or pump-drain configuration.
