About the Scotsman HID525
Overview
The Scotsman HID525 Meridian Series is a commercial nugget ice machine and dispenser that dispenses both ice and water. Its maximum 24-hour production is 500 lb (227 kg), and the bin holds 25 lb (11.3 kg). Production depends on operating conditions; the specification sheet gives the 500 lb figure at 70°F air and 50°F water. Scotsman’s chewable H² Nugget Ice is slow-melting and made in extruded pieces measuring 3/4 x 5/16 x 3/8 in.
The HID525 is available with air- or water-cooled condensing and touch-free infrared or push-button dispensing. The wall-mount configuration has no drip tray and is intended for installation over an existing sink. The standard countertop unit has a removable drip tray.
Key Features
- Two dispensing choices: Touch-free infrared sensing avoids the need to touch the dispenser; a push-button option is also available.
- Removable cleaning components: The bin, spouts, air filter, sink and grill can be removed for cleaning and maintenance.
- Antimicrobial components: AgION and other antimicrobial compounds are molded into key components to help inhibit microbes, bacteria, mold and algae.
- Service access: The front-accessible, removable air filter is easier to reach for cleaning. LED diagnostic lights help with service, and a USB port allows software updates. A unit-specific QR code provides access to service manuals and warranty history.
- Construction: The evaporator and exterior panels are stainless steel. Sealed, maintenance-free bearings reduce preventive maintenance.
- Dispensing and upkeep: SmoothStream water dispensing reduces splashing. The sealed refrigeration system minimizes outside airborne contamination.

Installation & Requirements
The specification sheet calls for 6 in of space at the left side, back and right side for ventilation and utility connections. Airflow is left to right. Connect the potable water supply at the 3/8 in flare inlet and the drain at the 3/4 in FPT connection. Water-cooled units also use a 3/8 in FPT condenser water inlet and a 1/2 in FPT condenser drain.
The unit is cord-connected and includes a 7.5 ft cord with a NEMA 5-15P plug. The listed electrical supply is 115 V, 60 Hz, single phase, with a 15 A maximum fuse or HACR circuit breaker rating. The wall-mount configuration has no drip tray and is intended to sit over an existing sink. The manual’s startup checks include confirming that the drip tray drains; that check applies to configurations with a drip tray.
Operation
At startup, check that both ice and water dispense and that the bin control stops ice production. The manual describes checking the bin control by removing the bin cover and blocking the eyes in the chute. For a unit with a drip tray, pour water into the tray to check drainage. Return the front and splash panels after the checks.
The machine makes ice continuously: an auger moves ice through the evaporator and the ice is extruded and broken into nuggets for dispensing. A dispense agitator and rotor move ice through the dispense chute. The bin control uses a photo-eye sensor. When an ice-making or dispensing fault occurs, the controller uses diagnostic codes and status lights to help identify it.
Cleaning & Maintenance
The service manual identifies drain flushing, drip-tray removal and cleaning, air-filter cleaning, water-system cleaning and sanitizing, and dispense-system cleaning and sanitizing as maintenance tasks. Remove visible debris from the drain. The manual suggests a weekly hot-water flush if beverages are commonly poured into the drip tray; it also says the drip tray can be removed if the drain is slow or plugged. The wall-mount configuration does not have a drip tray.
To clean the air filter, pull it out, wash it, let it dry and reinstall it. For the air-cooled condenser, the manual instructs the service person to remove the louvered panel, brush away loose lint and vacuum the condenser surface. The manual notes that the air filter is present on water-cooled units as well.
The cleaning reminder light comes on after six months of connected power time. The manual says to reset it after completing the factory cleaning process. Its scale-removal procedure begins by removing the front and splash panels, switching ice making off and shutting off the water. Drain the water system using the reservoir drain hose, then reconnect the hose when finished. The manual specifies using hot water to fill the reservoir and evaporator, soaking for two minutes and draining, followed by the scale-removal solution mixed at the manual’s stated ratio. Press Clean to run the auger cleaning cycle; the manual states that it runs for 30 minutes and can be stopped with the on/off button. Disconnect power before draining the solution, then flush with fresh water as directed in the service manual.
For sanitizing, the manual calls for a locally approved sanitizer and gives a procedure using sanitizer solution in the reservoir and bin. It instructs operators to disconnect power for parts of the cleaning process, wash removable bin and dispense components, chutes, drip tray and grill with the solution, drain and rinse the reservoir, reassemble the parts, restore power and restart ice making. Follow the Scotsman service manual for the complete scale-removal and sanitizing sequence and the chemical directions for the specific machine.
Troubleshooting
- No ice dispensing: If the agitator and dispense rotor turn but ice does not dispense, the manual lists a blockage at the outlet, overfilling bags, a restricted drain with water in the bottom of the bin, or room air outside the operating range as possible causes.
- Auger motor code 1: The manual identifies this as motor reversal. The unit shuts down and does not automatically restart. The listed service checks include the motor, a frozen auger and seized bearings.
- Auger motor code 2: The manual identifies this as motor stall. Check for a frozen auger or motor failure. If the unit cuts out on code 2 immediately after a reset, the manual notes that the motor’s magnet cup may be loose.
- No water, code 3: The manual lists an empty reservoir, plugged filters, a blocked float valve or water that is too clean. It notes that reverse-osmosis water should be no cleaner than 10 microSiemens/cm.
- High-pressure cutout, code 4: For a water-cooled unit, check for an interruption to condenser water. For an air-cooled unit, check for fan motor failure.
- Reading stored codes: The manual says to hold the vend-disable button, then hold the on/off button for 3 seconds or until the Status light comes on; release both buttons. Press Clean to cycle through available codes. The controller stores up to 30 codes.
These checks are taken from the HID312, HID525 and HID540 service manual. Electrical and refrigeration repairs should be handled by qualified service personnel using the model’s service documentation.
Applications
The HID525 is suited to healthcare settings, staff and visitor breakrooms, office suites, and food-service or hospitality areas that need convenient access to both ice and water. Its 25 lb bin and stated production capacity support repeated dispensing, while touch-free operation is an option for locations prioritizing reduced hand contact at the dispenser.
