About the Scotsman UC2024
Overview
The Scotsman UC2024 is an undercounter commercial ice machine in Scotsman’s cube ice range. This listing describes the air-cooled medium-cube configuration. It produces up to 227 lb of ice per 24 hours and has an insulated storage bin with an 80 lb capacity. An automatic control system maintains the ice level in the bin.
The medium cubes measure 7/8 inch high by 7/8 inch wide by 7/8 inch deep. The bin is insulated but not refrigerated, so stored ice melts during use; the manual identifies this as normal and notes that it keeps fresh ice available in the bin.
Key Features
- Undercounter format: The cabinet is 24 inches wide.
- Medium-cube production: Produces up to 227 lb per 24 hours, with an 80 lb storage capacity.
- Automatic ice-level control: The control system maintains the ice level in the bin.
- Air-cooled operation: Air enters through the right front grill and exits through the left front grill.
- Cleanable air filter: A filter at the lower front grill captures airborne dust and can be removed and washed.
- Front access for ice: Lift the bin door by its bottom edge and slide it up into the top of the machine.

Installation & Requirements
Location and airflow
The manual specifies indoor installation in a controlled environment and says the machine is not designed for outdoor use. For the air-cooled configuration, room air enters at the right front grill and heated air leaves through the left front grill. Do not block this airflow. The manual notes that restricted airflow or excessive heat reduces ice-making and storage capacity. Air-cooled machines installed in a small room require ventilation to exhaust heat from the condenser.
The manual states that no additional spacing is required at the top or sides. It suggests minimum installation clearances of 1/8 inch at the side and 1/4 inch at the top, and allows zero clearance at the back. Do not block the front louvers. Account for the total cabinet height if using the supplied legs. The machine may also be installed without legs.
Water and drain
Before installation, check that the location has room for the cabinet, a water supply, a drain and electrical power. The manual recommends filtering the water supplied to the ice machine to remove suspended solids; a coarse pre-filter ahead of a fine filter may be needed. Provide an accessible hand shutoff valve near the unit. The building drain inlet must be lower than the ice machine’s drain outlets.
For the water supply, the manual identifies a 3/8-inch FPT potable-water inlet. The potable-water pressure range is 20 to 80 psi. The stated water temperature range is 40°F to 100°F. Local plumbing codes may require a backflow preventer.
Electrical connection
This is a cord-connected unit. The manual calls for a separate, single-phase power supply and says to check the nameplate for the correct voltage. The UC2024 115 V models are listed as 115/60/1, with a maximum fuse or breaker size of 15 A and a 5-15P plug. The unit must be grounded; do not use an extension cord or disable or bypass the plug’s ground pin. Follow local codes. The outlet must be within reach of the supplied power cord.
Operation
For normal access, lift the bin door by its bottom edge and slide it up into the top of the machine. Use the scoop to remove ice, then close the door. The bin is insulated rather than refrigerated, so some melting during use is expected.
At startup, remove the louvered front panel, open the water valve and check for leaks, then switch on the electrical supply. Move the On/Wash/Off rocker switch to On. The machine starts with a 90-second harvest or defrost period before moving into freezing; water flows into the sump after a 90-second delay. When a batch has formed, the machine enters harvest and releases the ice into the bin. Movement of the ice-sensing plate signals the end of the harvest cycle.
The manual describes occasional pauses in water flowing over the evaporator as normal. On air-cooled models, the fan makes some noise during operation. Rattles and other vibrations are not normal and should be attended to. Allow the machine to take in room air and discharge heated air freely; blocked vents or excessive heat reduce production and storage capacity.
Cleaning & Maintenance
Ice machine cleaning and sanitizing
The manual recommends cleaning about twice a year and cautions that the machine will not remain sanitary without human intervention. It calls for food-grade scale remover, such as Scotsman Clear 1, along with sanitizer, clean cloths, rubber gloves and a clean container. A spray bottle is suggested for washing hard-to-reach areas. Keep the machine connected to water, power and drain during the cleaning procedure, and follow the manual’s safety directions: scale remover contains acids that can cause burns.
- Remove the front panel and move the On/Wash/Off switch to Off. Remove ice from the storage bin.
- Drain the sump by removing the plug from the drain hose beneath the control-box area, then replace the plug.
- Put on rubber gloves. Mix 5 oz (150 cc) of Scotsman Clear 1 with 2.5 quarts (2.4 L) of clean, warm potable water at 95°F to 115°F.
- Unsnap and remove the spray bar and ice-level control plate. Soak and wash them with clean cloths, then reinstall both parts.
- Pour the scale-remover solution into the sump and run the machine in Wash mode for 20 minutes. Stop Wash mode and drain the solution through the drain hose.
- Check that scale has cleared from the spray bar. If necessary, remove the bar to clear it, then return it to its original position.
- Mix a second scale-remover solution with lukewarm potable water and use it to wash the inside of the ice storage bin. Pour any remaining solution into the bin and ensure it drains away.
- Mix sanitizer according to the manual: 4 oz (118 ml) of NuCalgon IMS with 2.5 gal (9.5 L) of potable water at 90°F to 110°F, to make a 200 ppm solution.
- Pour half the sanitizer solution into the sump. Run Wash mode for 10 minutes, switch the machine off and drain the sump.
- Use the remaining sanitizer solution on the interior surfaces of the bin, including the bin door. Pour a gallon of hot potable water into the bin to clean out the drain.
- Return the control to ice making and reinstall the front panel.
Air filter and condenser
The air filter at the lower front grill captures airborne dust. As dirt accumulates, airflow is restricted and the refrigeration system works less efficiently. Clean the filter regularly: slide it to the right to remove it, wash off dust and dirt in a utility sink, then reinstall it. The manual notes that the filter’s snap fit may be tight.
The condenser fins require semi-annual cleaning. Unplug the unit before cleaning the condenser because the rotating fan blade can cause injury. Lightly brush dust from the condenser and use a vacuum to clean it thoroughly. Take care not to damage the fins.
Troubleshooting
Problem: No ice and the machine is silent. The manual advises checking that the unit is plugged in and that the outlet has power. It suggests temporarily plugging the unit into a nearby outlet to confirm whether power is available at the original outlet.
Applications
The medium cubes suit beverage service in commercial kitchens, bars and other food-service settings. The undercounter format and 80 lb bin provide on-site ice production and storage for service periods, while the 227 lb per 24-hour production rating describes the machine’s stated maximum output.
