About the Traulsen RMC34D6
Overview
The Traulsen RMC34D6 is a dual-access, forced-air milk cooler in a 34-inch-wide format. Its access from both sides can support cafeteria service where staff load product and students or other customers retrieve it from the opposite side. The unit is listed with 6-inch casters and a height of 48 inches. Product listings identify a stainless-steel exterior and interior.
Capacity information is presented in more than one format: the RMC34D6 holds up to 8 standard 13 × 13-inch milk crates or 4 13 × 19-inch crates. A separate listing gives capacity for 512 half-pint cartons. The crate figures refer to the listed crate dimensions; confirm the carton and crate arrangement needed for your service before ordering.

Installation & Requirements
The supplied milk-cooler manual says to check the unit’s serial tag for its correct voltage before connecting power. It calls for connections in accordance with local electrical codes, made by qualified electricians, and a separate, dedicated circuit sized for the load shown on the serial tag with the required overcurrent protection. Do not remove the grounding prong or use an extension cord. Since the serial tag records electrical and refrigeration information for the individual unit, use that tag rather than relying on a general listing when confirming site power.
The manual describes casters as factory-installed but requiring adjustment at installation. It instructs the operator to loosen the two bolts and reposition the leg or caster as needed; spacing between legs or casters must not exceed 48 inches, and a leg or caster at either end must be no more than 8 inches from the cabinet end. The manual also advises keeping the cabinet upright during transport where possible. If it has to be laid on its back, allow it to remain upright for 24 hours before plugging it in so compressor oil and refrigerant can settle.
On delivery, inspect the cabinet for transit damage. If damage is found, retain the crating material, note the damage on the carrier’s bill of lading and file a freight claim promptly. If damage is discovered after delivery or during installation, the manual advises contacting the carrier and filing a claim.
Operation
The milk-cooler instructions describe continuous circulation of above-freezing cabinet air through the evaporator coil. They state that an off-cycle defrost occurs every 8 hours for a maximum of 50 minutes to melt frost that may accumulate while the compressor is running. Milk coolers do not normally require manual defrosting, although the manual says a manual defrost option is available on the control if required.
The cabinet is intended for refrigerated product storage. Leave space between stored items so air can circulate. Do not load a large quantity of warm product and expect it to cool immediately; the manual notes that time is needed to remove heat and reach operating temperature. Opening the cabinet raises its temperature, and recovery takes time. The same applies after peak service periods or after warm product has been loaded.
Cleaning & Maintenance
The manual identifies regular condenser coil or filter cleaning as important to reliable service. Before cleaning, disconnect electrical power. Remove the system-side cover and vacuum or brush dirt, lint and dust from the finned condenser coil or filter, compressor and other cooling-system parts. If significant dirt is clogging the condenser fins or filter, the manual says to use compressed air to clear it. Refit the system-side cover after cleaning.
For exterior stainless-steel surfaces, use warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth, wiping in the direction of the metal grain. Avoid strong detergents and gritty or abrasive cleaners that could mar or scratch the surface. Do not use chlorine-containing cleansers such as bleach; the manual warns that these may promote corrosion. Avoid splashing the cabinet with water containing chlorinated floor cleaners. For stubborn odours or spills, the manual gives a mixture of 1 tablespoon of baking soda to 1 pint of water. It recommends stainless-steel polish for shine.
For a door-gasket replacement, the manual says to grasp one corner and pull the gasket out. Bring both the unit and replacement gasket to room temperature before installation. Seat the four corners first with a rubber mallet, or a hammer and a block of wood, then work from both ends toward the centre until the gasket is fully seated. The manual notes that a new gasket may appear too large but should fit when installed this way.
Troubleshooting
- Condensing unit does not start: Check whether the power cord and plug have become disconnected, and clean the condenser.
- Condensing unit runs for a long time or continuously: Check that the doors close properly. Inspect the condenser or filter for dirt and clean it. If the evaporator coils are iced, the manual says the unit needs to defrost.
- Milk compartment is too warm: Check that the doors and gaskets seal properly. Consider whether a large quantity of warm milk was recently added or a door was left open for a long time. Clean the condenser.
- Milk compartment is too cold: If a large quantity of very cold or frozen milk was recently added, allow time for the cabinet to recover its normal operating temperature.
- Condensation on the exterior: Check door alignment and gasket sealing. The manual says exterior condensation is normal during periods of high humidity.
Before requesting service, the manual recommends checking that the electrical cord is plugged in, the fuse is in good condition or circuit breaker is on, the condenser coil is clean and the power switch is on. If the unit still does not operate properly, contact a Traulsen service agent. Have the model and serial number available when seeking service support.
Applications
The RMC34D6’s dual access and crate capacity make it a practical format to consider for school cafeterias, including service lines where milk is loaded from one side and accessed from the other. The listed capacity also gives food-service operators a way to compare the cabinet with their crate or half-pint-carton service needs. Its 34-inch width and 6-inch casters are useful details to account for when planning the cooler’s position in a cafeteria or commercial food-service area.
