About the Vulcan Hart 2GR45MF
Overview
The Vulcan Hart 2GR45MF is a two-section floor fryer in Vulcan’s GRMF series. The product listing identifies it as a natural-gas model with two 50 lb vats. Its installation and operation manual lists the 2GR45MF as model ML-136417 and covers the GRMF series, including operation and the KleenScreen PLUS filtration system.
The built-in filtration system returns filtered oil to the fryer tank. The manual specifies that only one tank can be drained and filtered at a time; both tanks must not be drained at once. This arrangement supports routine oil filtering at a busy fry station without relying on a separate external filter unit.
Key Features
- Two fryer vats: The listing identifies two 50 lb vats for the 2GR45MF.
- KleenScreen PLUS filtration: The fryer battery uses a filter pan, screen assembly and suction tube to filter shortening and pump it back to a tank.
- Manual operating controls: The GRMF operating instructions describe a thermostat knob and pilot controls.
- Included items listed in the manual: The unpacking checklist includes two twin fry baskets, a crumb rack, basket hanger and tank brush. For fryer batteries with KleenScreen PLUS, it lists a filter pan, suction tube, screen assembly and a 6 ft high-temperature discard hose.
- Battery mobility: The manual states that fryer batteries with the KleenScreen PLUS system have casters installed from the factory.

- Combustible-construction clearance: 6 in. at the sides and 6 in. at the back.
- Hood and flue guidance: The hood must extend 6 in. beyond the fryer on both sides; the manual specifies at least 18 in. between the flue vent and hood filters.
Installation & Requirements
Gas supply
Before installation, verify that the gas type and elevation configuration agree with the fryer data plate, located inside the door panel. The gas inlet is at the lower rear. The manual calls for gas supply piping equivalent to at least 1-1/4 in. iron pipe for a battery. If an optional quick-disconnect flex hose is used, the battery supply piping is also specified as 1-1/4 in. iron pipe.
Install a gas shutoff valve in the supply line ahead of the fryer. Keep the supply piping clean and free of obstructions, dirt and piping compound. After making gas connections, check all joints with a soap-and-water solution for leaks; do not use an open flame. Purge air from the gas pipes after checking for leaks. The manual specifies 4 in. W.C. for natural gas and 10 in. W.C. for propane. If incoming pressure exceeds 1/2 PSI, an additional pressure regulator must be installed.
Ventilation and placement
Install the fryer under a hood connected to an exhaust duct. The hood must extend 6 in. beyond the fryer on both sides, and the manual specifies an 18 in. minimum gap between the flue vent and the hood filters. Do not connect the flue directly to the fryer or obstruct the flue opening. The room’s air balance must allow the fryer to exhaust properly; the manual warns that a downdraft at the flue can cause overheating and damage.
The stated minimum clearance from combustible construction is 6 in. at the fryer sides and 6 in. at the back. The fryer must be restrained against tipping and splashing of hot liquid. The manual identifies connection to a battery, installation in an alcove or adequate ties as possible restraint methods. For a fryer on casters with a quick-disconnect gas connection, the manual calls for a compliant connector and quick-disconnect device, plus a restraint that prevents strain on the gas line or quick-disconnect.
Operation
Preparing and frying
Before first use, clean the fryer as directed in the manual. When filling a tank with shortening, keep the cold oil below halfway between the MIN and MAX marks because the oil expands as it heats. Once the tank is filled, set the thermostat knob to the required cooking temperature; the burners heat the oil.
For consistent cooking, fry items of similar size together. Drain or wipe wet or raw foods before lowering them into hot shortening to reduce splattering. Do not overfill baskets. When frying French fries or onion rings, shake the basket several times; turn doughnuts and fritters once during cooking. Lower batter-covered foods carefully, one at a time. The manual recommends dipping a basket into the shortening first when using it for battered foods to reduce batter buildup. After cooking, remove the basket or product and hang the basket on the rear hanger.
Filtering
Filter oil daily at a minimum, following the manual’s KleenScreen PLUS procedure. Filter only one tank at a time; never drain both tanks at once. The filter pan, crumb basket and screen assembly should be washed and dried before assembly. Position the filter pan in the drawer, place the screen assembly flat on the pan and secure the suction tube in its clip. Align the suction tube nozzle with the oil receptacle on the fryer battery frame before closing the drawer.
For filtering, drain the tank so the oil flows into the filter pan, then pull the red FILTER lever to start the pump and return oil to the tank. After about a minute, close the drain valve so the tank can refill. When the filter pan is empty, push in the FILTER lever to stop the pump. Turn the FILTER switch off and return the gas lever to ON. Check that the oil level is between the MIN and MAX marks; add oil if needed. Repeat for the other tank only after finishing the first. After filtering, the manual recommends opening the drawer about 1 in. to let oil in the return line drain back into the filter pan before removing the drawer for cleaning.
Cleaning & Maintenance
Clean the fryer exterior at least daily with a damp cloth, warm water and mild soap or detergent. Rinse thoroughly and polish with a soft, dry cloth. Keep grease from accumulating on exterior surfaces. The manual says not to use chlorine or sulfate/sulfide cleaners, metallic scouring pads or harsh cleaners. For stubborn discoloration, it permits a self-soaping, non-metallic scouring pad; rub stainless steel with the grain.
Clean the tank regularly with the tank brush and a damp cloth, then polish with a soft, dry cloth. The manual says that neglecting regular cleaning can leave burned-on grease and discoloration. For the KleenScreen PLUS components, wash the filter pan, crumb basket and screen assembly with dishwashing detergent and warm water, rinse completely and dry. These components are listed as dishwasher safe. The manual says to replace the optional fabric filter envelope at each oil change for its stated filtration and flow recommendation, and specifically warns not to wash the fabric envelope.
For a boil-out, use the Boil Out By-Pass drain extension to direct the solution out of the tank without sending water through the filter pump. If the filter motor’s thermal overload trips, the manual says to wait 5 minutes and press the red reset button on the front of the motor/pump. The fryer must be cool before the manual’s annual flue inspection; inspect the flue and clear obstructions.
Troubleshooting
- Filter pump runs but oil does not filter: The service troubleshooting material lists a plugged filter screen or a clog in the filter lines as possible causes. It also notes that shortening below 300°F can be too thick to filter readily. The manual advises against filtering outside its stated 300°F to 350°F range.
- Filter pump overload trips: The operating manual attributes this protection to excess heat during prolonged filtering or heavy loading before debris is cleared. Wait 5 minutes, then press the red reset button on the front of the motor/pump.
- Oil return line retains oil after filtering: Open the drawer about 1 in. and allow approximately 30 seconds for oil in the return line to drain into the filter pan before opening the drawer fully.
- Oil level is low after filtering: Check the tank’s MIN and MAX marks and add fresh oil if necessary.
Gas, electrical and internal fryer servicing involves hazards. The service manual is intended for trained Vulcan service technicians; use a qualified service technician for work beyond routine operator procedures.
Applications
The 2GR45MF’s twin vats and integrated oil filtration suit commercial kitchens that need to fry separate products or manage simultaneous batches at a dedicated fry station. Operators can filter each tank in turn as part of daily oil care, then return the filtered shortening to its tank using the built-in system.
