About the Hobart CL86
Overview
The Hobart CL86 is a high-temperature rack conveyor commercial dishwasher for medium- and high-volume foodservice dishrooms. Its rated production capacity is 342 racks per hour, with a conveyor speed of 9.5 feet per minute. Installation & Requirements
Hobart specifies that plumbing and electrical connections be made by qualified personnel in accordance with applicable plumbing, sanitary, safety and electrical codes. CL86 utility requirements differ by heat configuration, so use the specification sheet and data plate for the machine being installed.
Water and drain
The spec sheets specify building flowing water pressure of 20 to 65 PSI at the machine and recommend water hardness of 3 grains or less for best results. The common hot-water connection is 1/2-inch FPT. The drain is 2-inch FPT and can connect at either end of its housing; the opposite end is plugged. Peak drain flow is 38 gallons per minute. The manual specifies a minimum 1/2-inch inside diameter for incoming water piping. It also says the water pressure regulator must have a relief bypass where a regulator is required.
For a CL-BAS machine with the 24 kW built-in booster, the manual gives a minimum incoming hot-water temperature of 110°F. Without a built-in booster, the manual lists 180°F minimum for hot-water sanitizing or 120°F minimum for chemical sanitizing. The spec sheet notes the 24 kW booster can be field converted to 12 kW when 140°F incoming water is provided.
Steam and gas connections
For the steam-heated configuration, the spec sheet lists steam supply at 10 to 50 PSI flowing through a 3/4-inch FPT connection. The condensate return is 3/4-inch FPT; a minimum 10 PSI differential pressure across the steam traps must be maintained. Two bucket-type traps are furnished. A pressure regulator is required on the steam supply if flowing pressure exceeds 50 PSI.
For the gas-heated configuration, the CL86 manual lists 156,000 BTU per hour input and a 3/4-inch NPT connection. Its gas table gives a flowing pressure range of 3.5 to 7 inches water column for natural gas and 9 to 11 inches water column for propane. The manual says static incoming gas pressure must not exceed 14 inches water column. A manual shut-off valve is required, and the appliance and connections must be leak tested with soapy water, never an open flame. Gas heat requires exhaust of flue gases to the exterior, with combustion and ventilation air kept unobstructed. Gas installation must comply with local requirements; the manual identifies CAN/CSA B149.1 and CSA C22.1 for Canada.
Electrical and ventilation
Electrical supply details depend on configuration. The supplied CL86-BAS steam sheet lists 208/60/3, 240/60/3 and 480/60/3 with the 24 kW booster; the gas sheet lists 208/60/3 and 240/60/3. Refer to the applicable model sheet and machine data plate when confirming the circuit. The sheets state that internal GFCI protection is not provided. The specified minimum exhaust airflow is 200 CFM at the load end and 400 CFM at the unload end. Gas exhaust venting must follow local code.
Operation
Before operation, the manual says to make sure the dishwasher is clean and all parts are in place. Where a scrapper is fitted, install its standpipe with strainer in the first tank where the rack enters. Install the rear and side strainer pans, lower the scrap basket, and fit the upper and lower wash arms with their sliders closed. Install the wash/rinse tank standpipes, strainer pan and scrap basket, then fit the tank wash arms. The manual directs the operator to push each arm onto its connector pipe so the opposite end is held by its guide, then lift or lower it into position.
The CL86 conveyor transports racks through the wash process at 9.5 feet per minute. The touchscreen provides controls, diagnostics and troubleshooting. The machine also has an energy saver mode with programmable auto shut-down; the manual’s symptom guide says to press WASH on the HMI to resume when the machine is in Energy Saver Mode.
Cleaning & Maintenance
The supplied product information identifies removal and disassembly of wash arms, filters and the scrapper system as part of maintenance. The manual’s pre-operation instructions also call for checking that the machine is clean and that standpipes, strainer pans, scrap baskets and wash arms are in place. It specifies that the wash-arm sliders be closed when installing the arms. The provided excerpts do not give a cleaning schedule or a service interval.
Troubleshooting
No machine operation
The manual lists these possible causes: a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker at the power supply; inspection door or doors not closed; a jammed conveyor; the auto-timer timing out; a tripped table limit switch, if one is used; or Energy Saver Mode. Its suggested checks are to close the doors, clear a conveyor jam, press START or insert a rack after an auto-timer timeout, check the table limit switch if fitted, and press WASH on the HMI to resume from Energy Saver Mode. Electrical faults should be handled by a qualified service person.
Dishes not clean
The manual lists insufficient wash water, a drain obstruction causing an open-drain condition, a worn or torn drain O-ring, open wash-arm sliders, blocked wash-arm nozzles, a worn or torn manifold O-ring, loss of water pressure due to pump obstructions, or incorrect water temperature. For a pump obstruction check, the manual instructs the operator to disconnect electrical power and follow lockout/tagout procedures, noting that multiple circuits may be present, then drain the tank or tanks and check for an obstruction at the pump intake. For incorrect water temperature, it says to check the circuit breaker to the electric heat supply, the main steam valve, or the gas supply valve, as applicable.
Selected display messages
- Error 018: wash tank water level is too high. Check the drain for obstructions and drain the machine; contact Hobart Service if the error persists or the machine cannot drain.
- Errors 020 and 023: tank fill time exceeded or water level did not rise as expected. Confirm the drain is closed, incoming water is on, and the fill hose is not kinked; verify water pressure is 20–65 PSI. Drain and try filling again where directed by the message; contact Hobart Service if the error continues.
- Error 029: wash interrupted because a door was opened during operation. Close the door or doors.
- Errors 083 and 084: final rinse temperature too low. Press ENTER to clear the error; for error 084, the wash cycle stops and the machine turns off. Contact Hobart Service if the issue persists.
- Errors identifying wash-tank or booster over-temperature trips, pressure-sensor faults, temperature-sensor faults, or contactor errors direct the operator to contact Hobart Service. For the wash-tank or booster contactor errors, the manual says to turn off the machine circuit breaker or breakers, not to drain the machine, and contact service.
- Error 234: an external conveyor is not ready. Ensure it has power and no errors; contact Hobart Service if the problem persists.
Applications
The CL86’s 342-rack-per-hour rating and conveyor format suit busy institutional and commercial dishrooms handling a steady stream of racks. Its 19.5-inch chamber opening also supports sheet-pan washing when used with an open-end sheet pan rack, as specified by Hobart. The configurable pot-and-pan cycle provides a named cycle option for suitable cookware.
