About the Hobart MG1532
Overview
The Hobart MG1532 is a commercial mixer-grinder for meat processing. It combines a 150 lb hopper with separate motors for grinding and mixing: a 7.5 HP grind motor and a 1 HP mix motor. Hopper capacity depends on the type of product. In MIX mode, the mixing arm turns while the grinder worm remains stationary; in MIX-GRIND mode, the arm and worm turn together for continuous self-feeding and grinding.
The grinding end uses Hobart’s WEDGE cylinder, sized for #32 knives and plates. The spec sheet identifies the WEDGE cylinder as providing full-rate feeding throughout the batch. The MG1532 is NSF rated, according to the manufacturer’s spec sheet.
Key Features
- Separate motors: 7.5 HP for grinding and 1 HP for mixing.
- 150 lb hopper: Meat capacity is up to 150 lb, depending on the product.
- WEDGE cylinder: Supports full-rate feeding and accepts #32 knives and plates. Knives and plates are not included as standard, but are optionally available.
- Double-wall construction: The spec sheet lists double-wall construction for added sanitation. The hopper has accessible interior and exterior surfaces.
- Removable parts and seals: The mixing arm, conveyor screw, cylinder, conveyor screw drive seal and mix arm seal can be removed for cleaning. The manual also describes hand-removable seals.
- Counterbalanced lid and interlock: The lid must be closed and latched for operation. Raising it opens the electrical circuit and makes the machine inoperative.
- Controls: Front-mounted, water-resistant switches, magnetic contactors, dual-motor overload protection and foot-switch operation capability. A double-sealed push-button control panel and condensate heater are listed among the standard features.
- Stainless steel finish: Glass-bead-finished stainless steel hopper with stainless steel panels enclosing the base assembly and motors.
- Side-feed option: Optional right-side feed allows tandem grinding. A #32 end-ring adapter is required to connect the MG1532 to another mixer-grinder in a tandem setup.

Installation & Requirements
Before installation, test the electrical service against the machine data plate. The manual says the machine is supplied with a cord and plug and requires an appropriately sized, grounding-type receptacle. Electrical and grounding connections must comply with applicable national and local electrical codes. The spec sheet calls for a watertight receptacle or connector selected for the machine voltage.
For three-phase machines, check motor rotation after connection. Viewed from the front, both the worm and mixing arm should rotate counterclockwise. If rotation is incorrect, disconnect the electrical supply, interchange any two incoming power leads, reconnect power and check rotation again.
If fitted, connect the pneumatic foot switch by inserting its tube firmly into the factory-installed fitting under the front floor panel. To remove the tube, press the fitting’s locking ring while gently pulling the tube. The manual says the front panels do not need to be removed for this step.
For caster installation, the manual describes fitting the casters while the machine remains on its skid. On a unit with two fixed and two swivel casters, fixed casters without brakes go at the rear and swivel casters with brakes at the front. Level the machine front-to-back and side-to-side by loosening the two set screws on each caster shaft, adjusting the caster, then tightening the set screws.
On unpacking, inspect the machine for shipping damage. If damage is found, the manual instructs the user to notify the carrier within five business days and the carrier’s local terminal immediately upon discovery, keep all original packing materials for inspection, and avoid moving, installing or modifying the machine. It also instructs the user to notify Hobart customer care at (800) 333-7447.
Operation
Controls and safety interlock
- MIX START: Starts the mixing arm. Press STOP to end mixing.
- MIX/GRIND START: Starts both the mixing arm and grinder worm. Press STOP to stop mixing and grinding.
- STOP: Turns the mixer-grinder off and turns off the foot switch if it was on.
- FOOT SWITCH: When foot-switch mode is on, the MIX START and MIX/GRIND START buttons are inoperable. The accessory foot switch can then be used for MIX-GRIND only. An indicator light shows when foot-switch mode is on; press STOP to turn it off.
- Hopper-lid interlock: The lid must be closed before the machine can operate. Raising it opens the electrical circuit and makes the machine inoperative.
Mixing and grinding procedure
Fill the hopper and close and latch the lid before starting. Do not overfill: the manual warns that overfilling can bend the hopper lid and may cause the interlock to open the electrical circuit. For first grind, press MIX-GRIND START and use STOP to stop. For a second grind, fill and close the hopper, press MIX to mix for the desired period, then press STOP. Start grinding with MIX-GRIND START and stop with STOP, or use the optional foot switch as applicable.
The manual says second-cut meat may be mixed in the hopper for any desired length of time. In MIX mode, only the mixing arm turns; the grinder worm does not. In MIX-GRIND mode, the machine continuously self-feeds while mixing and grinding. Mixing uncut or unground meat is not recommended.
Capacity and grinding rates
The manual gives a fresh boneless beef rate of 55–60 lb per minute through a 1/8 in. plate for first or second cut. Pork can be ground at 60–65 lb per minute: first cut through a 3/4 in. breaker plate and second cut through a 3/16 in. plate. Up to 60 lb of frozen meat per batch can be ground from flake or stick form when tempered to 26°F or higher, with the first grind through a 3/8 in. or larger plate. Hobart recommends using cold product and/or operating in a cold room to help reduce fatting at the grinder head, mixing arm and worm.
Cleaning & Maintenance
Disconnect the electrical supply before cleaning or servicing. After disconnecting power, seal the receptacle to prevent moisture from entering; the manual describes using the cover cap and turning its screw-type sealing ring clockwise on Hobart-supplied receptacles and pendant connectors. Remove the mixing arm, adjusting ring, knife and plate for cleaning. Remove the cylinder before removing the worm. The mixing-arm seal and worm seal can be removed by hand.
For grinder disassembly, use the spanner wrench to loosen the adjusting ring and remove the ring, plate and knife. Loosen, but do not remove, the two grinder-attachment flange nuts. Rotate the cylinder clockwise to remove it, then remove the worm. The manual says to wash the grinder attachment thoroughly before use. During reassembly, install the worm and then the cylinder, with the cylinder’s TOP marking visible. Tighten the cylinder flange nuts before fitting the knife, plate and adjusting ring, and use only the supplied flange nuts.
When assembling the knife and plate, orient the knife’s cutting side toward the perforated plate. Fit the plate notch over the pin in the cylinder. The manual says knives and plates must be sharp and true for proper cutting action. Before using the grinder attachment, apply tallow or food-grade mineral oil to the cutting faces of the knife and plate. After cleaning, a light coat of food-grade mineral oil is recommended on the cylinder location, adjusting ring, knife, plate and worm before reassembly. Refit the seals and make sure they are properly seated.
The control-box and front-panel heaters keep the controls dry and turn on automatically when the machine is electrically connected. The manual says to keep the machine connected except during assembly, disassembly, cleaning or maintenance, and to reconnect the electrical supply after cleaning. Both motor bearings are pre-lubricated and sealed and require no further lubrication. For the mixing-arm and worm gear cases, contact Hobart Service annually or when lubrication maintenance is needed. The manual directs users to their local Hobart Service office for repairs or adjustments.
Troubleshooting
If the worm and mixing arm do not rotate counterclockwise when viewed from the front on a three-phase machine, the manual instructs the operator to disconnect the electrical supply, interchange any two incoming power leads, reconnect power and verify rotation. If the hopper-lid interlock opens the circuit, check that the lid is closed and latched; do not overfill the hopper, as this can bend the lid and cause the interlock to open the circuit. For repairs or adjustments, contact a local Hobart Service office.
Applications
The MG1532 is suited to commercial meat-preparation tasks involving mixing and grinding fresh boneless beef, pork and tempered frozen meat within the capacities and plate conditions specified above. Operators can mix second-cut meat in the hopper before grinding, or use MIX-GRIND for simultaneous mixing and grinding. The optional right-side feed supports tandem grinding when used with the required #32 adapter ring.
