About the Hobart MG2032
Overview
The Hobart MG2032 Mixer-Grinder combines batch mixing and grinding for commercial meat-processing work. Its hopper capacity is up to 200 pounds, depending on the product. Hobart specifies a 7.5 HP grind motor and a separate 1 HP mix motor. During MIX, the mixing arm turns while the grinder worm remains stationary; during MIX-GRIND, the arm and worm operate together for continuous self-feeding and grinding.
The mixer-grinder has a WEDGE cylinder grinding end sized for #32 knives and plates. The knives and plates are optional and are not included as standard, according to the spec sheet. The hopper is angled for loading, and the grinding end is positioned for discharge. Stainless steel surfaces and removable food-contact components support cleaning between production runs.
Key Features
- Separate motors: 7.5 HP grind motor and 1 HP mix motor.
- Large batch capacity: Hopper capacity up to 200 pounds, depending on product.
- WEDGE cylinder: Hobart states that the cylinder ensures full-rate feeding for the entire batch.
- Mixing and grinding modes: MIX runs the mixing arm; MIX-GRIND runs the arm and grinder worm together.
- Counterbalanced lid and electrical interlock: The lid must be in its operating position for the grinder motors to start. Raising the lid opens the electrical circuit and makes the machine inoperative.
- Cleaning access: The mixing arm, conveyor screw, cylinder, conveyor screw drive seal and mix arm seal are removable.
- Double-wall construction: Listed by Hobart as a sanitation feature.
- Front controls: Water-resistant push-button controls include MIX START, MIX/GRIND START and STOP. The control panel has a condensate heater.
- Optional side feed: A right-side hopper inlet is available for tandem grinding. A #32 end ring adapter is required when the MG2032 is connected to another mixer-grinder for tandem side-feed operation.
- Optional pneumatic foot control: Enables MIX-GRIND operation by foot switch and can reduce operator fatigue.

Installation & Requirements
Electrical connection
Before installation, check the machine data plate and confirm that the electrical service matches the machine’s specified voltage and configuration. The spec sheet lists 208/60/3 at 30 A or 480/60/3 at 15 A, with an 8 ft cord and plug. Use the corresponding receptacle configuration shown in the specifications. Hobart specifies a watertight receptacle or connector installed in a Type FD conduit box. The manual states that electrical and grounding connections must comply with applicable national and local electrical codes. The machine is supplied with a cord and plug and requires an appropriately sized grounding-type receptacle.
Unpacking, casters and levelling
After unpacking, inspect the mixer-grinder for shipping damage. If damage is found, the manual directs the operator to notify the carrier within five business days of receipt, contact the carrier’s local terminal immediately after discovery, record the time, date and person contacted, and follow up in writing or electronically. Keep the original packing materials. The machine must not have been moved, installed or modified before reporting the damage. The manual also directs the operator to notify Hobart customer care.
For caster installation, the manual describes raising one end of the skid 2 inches and blocking the runners, then mounting the casters from underneath with the supplied bolts, lockwashers and washers. Repeat for the other end before removing the skid braces and lag screws. For a setup with two fixed and two swivel casters, install the fixed casters without brakes at the rear and the swivel casters with brakes at the front. Level the mixer-grinder front-to-back and side-to-side by loosening the two set screws on each caster shaft and screwing the caster up or down; tighten the set screws when level.
Operation
Controls and interlock
- MIX START: Starts the mixing arm. Press STOP to end mixing.
- MIX/GRIND START: Starts both the mixing arm and grinder worm. Press STOP to stop mixing and grinding.
- STOP: Turns the mixer-grinder off and turns an active foot switch off.
- FOOT SWITCH: When switched on, the front MIX and MIX/GRIND start buttons are inoperable. The optional pneumatic foot switch can then be used for MIX-GRIND only. An indicator light shows when foot-switch mode is on.
- Hopper lid interlock: The lid must be closed and latched before operation. Raising it opens the electrical circuit and makes the machine inoperative.
Mixing and grinding procedure
For a first grind, fill the hopper, close and latch the lid, then press MIX-GRIND START. Press STOP to stop. Do not overfill: the manual warns that overfilling can bend the hopper lid and may cause the interlock to open the electrical circuit.
For a second grind, fill the hopper and close and latch the lid. Press MIX to mix the product for the required time, then press STOP. Press MIX-GRIND START to grind, or use the optional foot switch when foot-switch mode is on. Press STOP to stop the operation. The manual says second-cut meat may be mixed in the hopper for a desired length of time, but mixing uncut or unground meat is not recommended.
For fresh boneless beef, Hobart specifies a rate of 55–60 lb per minute through a 1/8-inch plate, first or second cut. For pork, the stated rate is 60–65 lb per minute: first cut through a 3/4-inch breaker plate and second cut through a 3/16-inch plate. Up to 60 lb of frozen meat per batch may be ground from flake or stick form when tempered to 26°F or higher, with the first grind through a 3/8-inch or larger plate. Hobart recommends cold product and/or operation in a cold room to help reduce fatting at the grinder head and on the mixing arm and worm.
Grinder attachment assembly
The grinder cylinder is marked TOP and BOTTOM; confirm TOP is visible before operating. To remove the attachment, use the spanner wrench to loosen the adjusting ring and remove the adjusting ring, plate and knife. Loosen—but do not remove—the grinder attachment’s two flange nuts, rotate the cylinder clockwise and remove it, then remove the worm. For reassembly, install the worm and cylinder, confirm TOP is visible and tighten the cylinder flange nuts before fitting the knife, plate and adjusting ring. Use only the flange nuts provided. When assembling the knife, face its cutting side toward the perforated plate. Fit the plate notch over the pin in the cylinder. Hobart states that knives and plates must be sharp and true for proper cutting action.
Cleaning & Maintenance
Disconnect the electrical power supply before cleaning or servicing. After disconnecting power, seal the receptacle against moisture; for Hobart-supplied receptacles and pendant connectors, the manual directs the operator to place the cover cap and turn the screw-type sealing ring clockwise. Remove the mixing arm, grinder adjusting ring, knife and plate. Remove the cylinder before removing the worm. Remove the mix-arm seal and worm seal by hand for cleaning. The rubber seal at the worm drive end can be removed by hand or eased out with a dull screwdriver; reinstall it before installing the worm.
Before first use of the grinder attachment, take it apart and wash it thoroughly. Rub tallow or food-grade mineral oil over the cutting faces of the knife and plate before assembly. After cleaning, the manual recommends a light coat of food-grade mineral oil at the cylinder location for the cylinder, adjusting ring, knife, plate and worm before reassembly. Squeeze the sides of each seal and push it into place, then push in the top; confirm that the seals are seated correctly.
The manual says the mixer-grinder is shipped with oil installed. If oil loss is observed, check the oil levels of both transmissions before operation and contact Hobart Service. Both motor bearings are pre-lubricated and sealed and require no further lubrication. For lubrication maintenance of the mixing-arm and worm gear cases, the manual directs operators to contact Hobart Service annually or when needed. Reconnect the electrical supply after cleaning. The control-box heater—and, as described in the operation manual, the front control-panel heater—turns on automatically when the machine is connected. The machine should remain connected except during assembly, disassembly, cleaning or maintenance.
Troubleshooting
The manual provides a motor-rotation check for three-phase machines. If rotation needs correction, disconnect the electrical supply before interchanging any two incoming power leads. Reconnect the supply and press MIX-GRIND START to verify that both the worm and mixing arm rotate counterclockwise when viewed from the front. Electrical work must follow applicable electrical and grounding codes. If the hopper lid is raised, the interlock opens the electrical circuit and prevents operation; close and latch the lid before starting. For repairs or adjustments, the manual directs operators to contact a local Hobart Service office.
Applications
The MG2032 is specified for batch mixing and grinding meat in commercial food-processing operations. Hobart’s performance figures cover fresh boneless beef, pork and tempered frozen meat. Its separate mixing and grinding functions support processes that call for mixing second-cut meat in the hopper before grinding. The optional right-side feed inlet allows tandem grinding when configured with the required #32 end ring adapter.
