About the Hobart PD35
Overview
The Hobart PD35 is a self-contained tabletop power drive for compatible food-preparation attachments. Its 350 RPM drive and No. 12 attachment hub provide a powered base for prep tasks rather than a stand-alone slicing or processing function. Hobart documentation identifies use with the 9-inch VS9 slicer and its slicer, shredder and grater options, as well as a power dicer. Hobart’s specification sheet also lists a No. 12 meat chopper attachment. Since accessory descriptions vary among the supplied documents, check the attachment’s model and its instructions to confirm compatibility before use.
The unit has a stainless steel cover over a painted steel frame, a heavy cast iron attachment hub and cast aluminum legs with neoprene pads. Its manual on/off switch and supplied grounded cord make it a cord-connected tabletop appliance. A second position for the front legs allows a slicer to discharge over the edge of a work table.
Key Features
- 350 RPM drive: The PD35 runs at 350 RPM. Hobart identifies this speed with the PD35 model; the PD70 is a separate, related 700 RPM model.
- 1/2 HP motor: The motor is fan cooled, permanently lubricated and enclosed within the machine. The specification sheet describes it as capacitor-start and induction-run.
- No. 12 attachment hub: A heavy cast iron hub accepts compatible No. 12 attachments. The hub assembly uses sealed, grease-packed needle bearings.
- Poly-V belt transmission: The drive includes a Poly-V belt transmission and hardened steel output shaft.
- Commercial construction: The stainless steel cover is secured to a painted steel frame. Hobart specifies a satin-finish stainless cover, bright chrome attachment hub and gray-finish steel frame.
- Tabletop legs: Cast aluminum legs have neoprene pads. The front legs can be positioned in an alternate location for slicer discharge over a table edge.
- Manual switch: The two-pole on/off switch has an integral seal.

Installation & Requirements
Before installation, verify that the building’s electrical service agrees with the specifications on the machine data plate. The PD35 specification is 115/60/1, and Hobart lists 9.7 amps for this model. The manufacturer’s sheet gives a 15-amp service current requirement when the plug is connected and identifies a NEMA 5-15P grounding plug with a 5-15R receptacle configuration. It also notes that plug and receptacle arrangements depend on local power codes. Electrical and grounding connections must comply with applicable local electrical codes, as stated on the specification sheet.
The unit is supplied with a 6-foot grounding-type cord and plug. The manual’s unpacking instructions say to check for shipping damage promptly after receipt. If damage is found, notify the carrier within five business days, contact its local terminal immediately and record the time, date and person spoken to, then confirm the report in writing or electronically. Keep all original packing materials for inspection. The manual says the unit must not have been moved, installed or modified before the damage claim is handled, and instructs users to notify Hobart customer care.
No ventilation connection or clearance dimension is specified in the supplied PD35 installation instructions. The manual does identify an alternate front-leg position that can let a slicer discharge over the table edge.
Operation
Use the PD35 only with an attachment confirmed for the unit. The installation and operation manual describes the PD35 as operating a power dicer or a 9-inch slicer attachment with slicer, shredder or grater options. Hobart’s specification sheet lists the VS9 vegetable slicer and a No. 12 meat chopper attachment as accessories. Because these documents differ in how they identify compatible attachments, verify the attachment model and instructions before connecting it.
The PD35 operates at 350 RPM. The manual distinguishes it from the PD70: that related model operates at 700 RPM and, according to the manual, is not intended to drive the power dicer. Attachments are accessories and are not included in the power drive specification. The PD35 has an on/off manual switch and is supplied with a grounding-type cord.
Cleaning & Maintenance
Unplug the power cord before cleaning. The manual says the stainless steel housing and chromed attachment hub can be wiped with a damp cloth. Unplug the cord before cleaning, servicing or removing parts, and replace parts before operating the unit again.
The motor is permanently lubricated and does not require additional operator lubrication. The hub assembly’s sealed needle bearings are grease packed during assembly and likewise do not require operator lubrication. For repairs or adjustments, the manual directs users to contact a local Hobart authorized service office.
Applications
With a confirmed compatible attachment, the PD35 can support food-prep work such as slicing, shredding or grating with the 9-inch slicer options described in the manual. The manufacturer specification sheet also lists the VS9 vegetable slicer for cheese and vegetables and a No. 12 meat chopper attachment. The manual additionally identifies a power dicer as an attachment for the PD35. These are attachment-dependent tasks; the power drive itself is the motorized base.
The alternate front-leg position is useful when a compatible slicer needs to discharge product over the edge of a table. The compact tabletop format places the drive at a prep workstation without a separate floor base.
