PD70

Overview

The Hobart PD70 is a self-contained, table-model power drive for commercial food preparation. Its motor turns the output at 700 RPM and drives attachments fitted to its No. 12 hub. Hobart’s product specification lists the VS9 vegetable slicer for vegetables only and a No. 12 meat chopper attachment for meat. The installation and operation manual specifically states that the PD70 is not for use with the power dicer. Attachments are separate from the power drive.

The unit has a stainless steel housing and cover on a painted steel frame. It is supplied with a 6-foot, three-wire grounding cord and an On/Off switch. Installation & Requirements

Before installation, the manual instructs the operator to check that the electrical service agrees with the specifications on the machine data plate. The PD70 electrical rating in Hobart’s spec sheet is 115 V, 60 Hz, single phase, at 7.3 amps. That sheet also lists a 15-amp service-current requirement when the plug is connected, a NEMA 5-15P grounding plug and a matching NEMA 5-15R receptacle configuration. Electrical and grounding connections must comply with applicable electrical codes, as stated in the spec sheet.

The unit is supplied with a grounding-type cord approximately 6 feet long. The manual instructs users to inspect the equipment for shipping damage promptly after receipt. If damage is found, it says to notify the carrier within five business days, contact the carrier’s local terminal immediately when the damage is discovered and confirm the report in writing or electronically. Keep the original packing materials for inspection, do not move, install or modify the unit, and notify Hobart customer care, according to the manual’s damaged-shipment procedure.

The front legs have an alternate mounting position. The manual identifies this position as an option for placing a slicer so product can discharge over the edge of a table. No ventilation clearance or gas connection requirement is specified for this power drive.

Operation

The PD70 is a powered base for compatible attachments, not a stand-alone food-processing attachment. Fit an appropriate attachment to the No. 12 hub and use the On/Off switch to operate the drive. Hobart lists the VS9 vegetable slicer for vegetables only and a No. 12 meat chopper attachment for meat. The PD70 runs at 700 RPM and must not be used with the power dicer; that limitation is stated in the installation and operation manual. The PD35 is the related 350-RPM model identified in the manual as suitable for the power dicer.

Hobart’s spec sheet lists the VS9 vegetable slicer and No. 12 meat chopper attachment as accessories. The attachment is not included in the drive’s listed standard features; confirm the attachment needed for the intended preparation task separately.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Unplug the power cord before cleaning. The manual says the stainless steel housing and chromed attachment hub can be wiped with a damp cloth to keep the unit clean. It also directs users to unplug the power cord before cleaning, servicing or removing parts, and to replace parts before operating the unit again.

The motor is permanently lubricated and requires no further lubrication. The sealed shell-type needle bearings in the hub assembly are grease-packed at assembly and do not require operator lubrication. For repairs or adjustments, the manual directs users to contact a local Hobart authorized service office.

Applications

The PD70 is suited to commercial kitchens that need a powered drive for compatible vegetable preparation or meat-chopping attachments. Examples include restaurant and catering prep stations preparing vegetables with a VS9 slicer, or kitchens using a compatible No. 12 meat chopper attachment.
