About the Hobart QSAUF1
Overview
The Hobart QSAUF1 is a single-section over/under refrigeration system in the Q Series reach-in cabinet line. The Q Series manual describes this arrangement as a medium-temperature unit and a low-temperature unit placed one above the other. It identifies the medium-temperature refrigeration setting as 38°F and the low-temperature setting as 0°F. This combination provides separate refrigerated and frozen storage in one cabinet for commercial kitchen operations.
The supplied Q Series documentation includes installation and operating instructions as well as a replacement-parts catalog for the over/under refrigeration system. The parts catalog lists refrigerator and freezer condensing and evaporator assemblies, reflecting the two temperature functions of the cabinet. Use the unit’s own data plate and model documentation to confirm its service details.
Key Features
- Over/under arrangement: A medium-temperature section and low-temperature section are combined in a single-section cabinet.
- Separate temperature functions: The manual gives 38°F for medium-temperature refrigeration and 0°F for low-temperature refrigeration.
- Thermometer options: The standard digital thermometer is factory-calibrated and cannot be recalibrated. An optional dial thermometer can be recalibrated; the manual advises contacting a Hobart-authorized Refrigeration Service Company if its reading differs from an accurate test thermometer.
- Freezer defrost controls: The freezer may be equipped with an electronic defrost timer or a dial timer, as described in the Q Series manual.
Specifications
- Model: Hobart QSAUF1.
- Product type: Q Series over/under refrigeration system; reach-in food storage cabinet.
- Configuration: Single-section cabinet with medium- and low-temperature units arranged one above the other.
- Medium-temperature setting stated in the manual: 38°F.
- Low-temperature setting stated in the manual: 0°F.
- Thermometer: Standard digital thermometer is factory-calibrated and not recalibratable; optional dial thermometer can be recalibrated.
- Electronic defrost timer, when equipped: Factory defrost duration is 25 minutes, with a preset schedule of four cycles daily at 2 AM, 8 AM, 2 PM and 8 PM. All 24 schedule switches set to OFF enable the factory schedule.
- Defrost timer battery, when equipped: The manual gives an estimated battery life of 10 years and describes the battery as permanent and not replaceable separately from the timer.
Installation & Requirements
Inspect the cabinet immediately after unpacking. If shipping damage is found, retain the packaging and contact the carrier within 15 days of delivery, as directed by the manual. Before installation, test the electrical service and confirm that it agrees with the specifications on the machine data plate. The manual locates this plate inside the cabinet at the upper left.
The refrigeration condensing unit needs an adequate air supply for cooling. The manual specifies either a minimum of 12 inches of overhead clearance above the condensing unit or unrestricted airflow to it. It does not provide a QSAUF1 electrical rating in the supplied text; use the machine data plate to verify the electrical service for the individual cabinet.
Operation
Temperature indication and control
The standard digital thermometer is calibrated at the factory and does not permit recalibration. If the cabinet has the optional dial thermometer, compare its reading with an accurate test thermometer when checking its indication. If the readings vary, the manual directs the operator to contact a Hobart-authorized Refrigeration Service Company.
Electronic freezer defrost timer
On freezers equipped with an electronic defrost timer, the timer is located in a control box behind the trim rail at the top of the reach-in freezer. The manual says the clock is set at the factory to Central Standard Time. Once connected to AC power, the timer operates from that supply; its battery serves as backup during an interruption or outage. In normal operation, the SET CLOCK light blinks rapidly. The factory duration is 25 minutes, and the preset defrost starts are 2 AM, 8 AM, 2 PM and 8 PM. With all 24 schedule switches OFF, this factory schedule is active.
The timer allows the operator to set a different duration or schedule using its switches and controls. The manual calls 25 minutes the usual and recommended defrost duration. For a custom schedule, the upper switches represent AM hours and the lower switches represent PM hours. The manual requires at least two hours between the start of any two cycles. To schedule a cycle on the half-hour, set the two adjacent switches for that time. Leave the switches set to the chosen schedule during normal operation if it differs from the factory preset.
To start a defrost manually, press the MANUAL DEFROST button. The DEFROST ON light indicates that a cycle is underway, and the cycle runs for the programmed duration. To cancel an active cycle, hold MANUAL DEFROST for three seconds; the normal defrost schedule remains in effect. If all three timer lights—SET CLOCK, PROGRAM and DEFROST ON—blink, the manual indicates that the backup battery has weakened. After a power interruption in this condition, reset the clock to the current time to avoid defrosts starting at inconvenient times.
Dial defrost timer
The manual also illustrates a dial-style defrost timer, with a 24-hour exterior dial, time-of-day pointer and defrost-cycle pins. It describes the illustrated defrost cycle as 26 minutes. The supplied text does not establish which timer is fitted to every QSAUF1; check the installed control before following timer-specific instructions.
Cleaning & Maintenance
Cabinet and door gaskets
Clean the inside of the cabinet and the doors weekly with warm water and a mild household liquid dishwashing detergent. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean, soft cloth. Do not use cleaners containing grit, abrasive materials, bleach or harsh chemicals. The manual cautions that new or improved cleaning formulas should be tested carefully before use. Clean door gaskets weekly with the same mild detergent solution. Keep concentrated cleaners and disinfectants off the gaskets because they can cause premature failure of the gasket material.
Condenser coil
The manual calls for a weekly condenser-coil check to keep the surface free of dirt and grease for proper system operation. Disconnect electrical power before cleaning the condensing unit. Remove the front trim panel, carefully vacuum or brush dirt and lint from the coil, and replace the trim panel.
Evaporator and condensate components
When needed, flush the evaporator coil, drain pan, condensate loop and condensate dish with fresh water. The manual recommends including this work in a routine maintenance program. The replacement-parts catalog also identifies separate refrigerator and freezer evaporator assemblies and drain pans, as well as a condensate pan and heater.
Lighting, when equipped
For a cabinet equipped with incandescent lighting, the manual specifies a 40-watt appliance-type bulb. For fluorescent lighting, it specifies a replacement tube of the same size and type: 40 watts and 48 inches long. Remove and replace the protective cover as described in the manual.
Troubleshooting
If the unit fails to operate, the manual lists these possible causes and checks:
- Check whether there has been a power failure.
- Check that the plug is seated in the receptacle.
- Check for a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker.
- If a freezer model is in a defrost cycle, wait 30 minutes and check again.
- Check that the temperature control is not set to OFF.
If these checks do not resolve the problem, the manual advises contacting service. For an electronic defrost timer that has lost its backup battery power, consult the timer instructions and reset the clock after power is restored.
Applications
The separate refrigerated and frozen sections make the QSAUF1 suitable for commercial kitchens that need both medium-temperature food storage and low-temperature storage in one reach-in cabinet. Its over/under arrangement can support kitchens organizing chilled and frozen ingredients near preparation, cooking or service areas. Confirm that the required temperatures and available electrical service match the needs of the operation and the unit’s data plate.
