About the Hobart QSUF1
Overview
The Hobart QSUF1 is an over/under refrigeration system in the Q Series reach-in food storage cabinet family. The manual describes single-section over/under cabinets as having a medium-temperature unit and a low-temperature unit, one above the other. This arrangement provides separate refrigerated and frozen storage sections in one cabinet.
The Q Series manual gives a medium-temperature setting of 38°F and a low-temperature setting of 0°F. It also describes other Q Series cabinet types, but those configurations are not specifications for the QSUF1 and are not covered here.
Key Features
- Two storage temperatures: The over/under arrangement combines a medium-temperature section and a low-temperature section.
- Temperature display: The manual describes a standard digital thermometer, calibrated at the factory and not adjustable for recalibration. An optional dial thermometer can be recalibrated.
- Freezer defrost controls: Where the freezer is equipped with an electronic defrost timer, its schedule and duration can be reviewed or customized using the timer controls described in the manual.
- Routine-care guidance: The manual provides instructions for cleaning the cabinet, door gaskets and condenser coil, as well as flushing other listed refrigeration components when needed.
Specifications
- Product type: Q Series over/under refrigeration system and reach-in food storage cabinet.
- Configuration: Single-section over/under arrangement with a medium-temperature unit and a low-temperature unit, one above the other.
- Medium-temperature setting stated in the manual: 38°F.
- Low-temperature setting stated in the manual: 0°F.
- Thermometer: Standard digital thermometer is factory calibrated and does not permit recalibration; an optional dial thermometer can be recalibrated.
- Q Series cabinet warranty stated in the manual: Two years, including parts, labor and travel during normal working hours.
Installation & Requirements
Inspect the reach-in for shipping damage immediately after unpacking. If damage is found after unpacking, the manual says to retain the packaging and contact the carrier within 15 days of delivery.
Before installation, test the electrical service and compare it with the specifications on the machine data plate. The data plate is located inside the cabinet in the upper-left corner. The manual does not provide a QSUF1 voltage or current figure in the supplied text, so use the unit’s data plate for its electrical requirements.
For refrigeration models, the condensing unit needs an adequate supply of cooling air. The manual specifies a minimum 12-inch overhead clearance for the condensing unit as one way to provide airflow. The supplied manual excerpt cuts off the alternative airflow instruction, so no additional clearance dimension is stated here.
Operation
Use the cabinet’s temperature controls to operate the refrigeration sections. The Q Series manual identifies 38°F as the medium-temperature setting and 0°F as the low-temperature setting. Check the cabinet temperature using its thermometer. The standard digital thermometer is factory calibrated and cannot be recalibrated. If the cabinet has the optional dial thermometer, the manual says to compare it with an accurate test thermometer and contact a Hobart-authorized Refrigeration Service Company if the readings vary.
Electronic freezer defrost timer
If the freezer is equipped with an electronic defrost timer, the timer is located in a control box behind the trim rail at the top of the reach-in freezer. To access it, remove the thumbscrew on the left side of the control box and slide the lid to the left. Retain the thumbscrew and lid and replace them after programming.
The manual states that the timer’s clock is set at the factory to the current time-of-day for Central Standard Time. The factory defrost duration is 25 minutes, and the preset schedule starts defrost four times daily: 2 AM, 8 AM, 2 PM and 8 PM. With all 24 schedule switches off, the factory schedule remains active. For a custom schedule, move the switches for the desired hours; two adjacent switches can be used to start a cycle on the half-hour. Allow at least two hours between the starts of any two defrost cycles.
The manual calls 25 minutes the usual and recommended defrost duration. To change the duration, first enter the timer programming mode described in the manual, move all 24 switches to the off position, then move the duration switch for the desired setting in five-minute increments. Hold the SET button until the DEFROST ON light begins blinking, then release it. Use the manual’s Program Review procedure to check the clock and duration after programming.
A manual defrost can be started by pressing the MANUAL DEFROST button. While a defrost cycle is active, the DEFROST ON light is lit. To cancel that cycle, press and hold MANUAL DEFROST for three seconds; the normal programmed schedule continues afterward.
If the SET CLOCK, PROGRAM and DEFROST ON lights all blink, the manual identifies a weakened timer backup battery. It estimates battery life at 10 years and states that the battery is not replaceable separately from the defrost timer. If power is interrupted after the battery has weakened, the timer resumes as if it were midnight, the switch positions govern the schedule, and the factory 25-minute duration is restored. Reset the clock to the current time-of-day after power returns to avoid defrost cycles at unintended times.
Cleaning & Maintenance
Cabinet and doors
Clean the inside of the cabinet and the doors weekly with warm water and a mild household liquid dishwashing detergent. The manual cautions against cleaners containing grit, abrasive materials, bleach or harsh chemicals. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean, soft cloth.
Door gaskets
Clean the door gaskets weekly with warm water and mild household liquid dishwashing detergent. Do not allow concentrated cleaners or disinfectants to contact the gaskets; the manual warns that they can cause premature failure of the gasket material.
Condenser coil and other components
Disconnect the electrical power supply before cleaning the condensing unit. Check the condenser coil weekly and keep it free of dirt and grease for proper system operation. Remove the front trim panel and carefully vacuum or brush dirt and lint from the coil, then replace the trim panel.
When needed, flush the evaporator coil, drain pan, condensate loop and condensate dish with fresh water. The manual recommends including this in routine maintenance. For models equipped with an incandescent appliance bulb, replace it only with a 40-watt incandescent appliance-type bulb. Where equipped with a fluorescent light, the manual specifies a 40-watt, 48-inch tube of the same size and type.
Troubleshooting
If the unit fails to operate, the manual lists a power failure, a loose plug, a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker as possible causes. Check the power supply and plug, then check the temperature control to confirm it is not set to OFF. If a freezer model is in a defrost cycle, wait 30 minutes and check again. If these checks do not resolve the problem, the manual advises contacting service.
Applications
The QSUF1’s over/under arrangement suits commercial foodservice operations that need medium-temperature and frozen food storage in one reach-in cabinet. Separate sections can support everyday kitchen tasks such as keeping chilled ingredients accessible while storing frozen stock nearby. Use the manual’s stated temperature settings and the cabinet’s own controls and thermometer to manage storage conditions.
