About the Hobart HHTC4
Overview
The Hobart HHTC4 is a 4-foot-wide, two-tier, self-service hot deli display case. The HHTC series holds hot food at regulated temperatures to help maintain freshness and quality. An opening on the customer side lets customers reach in for self-service, while sliding glass doors on the operator side provide access for loading packaged food.
The case uses stainless steel and clear or mirrored tempered glass. Electronic temperature regulation controls the well heat and air stream. The HHTC4 has a stated maximum operating capacity of 66 lb (30 kg) on the bottom tier and 33 lb (15 kg) on the top tier. The manual says HHTC4, HHTC6 and HHTC8 cases can be placed next to one another in different configurations.
Key Features
- Two-tier hot food display with customer-side self-service access.
- Electronic well temperature controller with an adjustable set point.
- Upper and lower heat switches, a light switch and a main power switch.

Installation & Requirements
Before installation
Check that the electrical service matches the specifications on the machine data plate, located on the operator side of the case. The installation location must provide adequate clearance for servicing and proper operation; the manual does not give a numerical clearance measurement.
After unpacking, inspect the case for shipping damage. If it is damaged, retain the packaging and contact the carrier within 15 days of delivery. Remove the vinyl paper from stainless steel surfaces. The manual includes assembly instructions for the side glass panels, lower front glass panel, sliding glass doors, wire shelf, main power switch knob, lower operator-side panel and light bulbs.
Electrical connection and codes
To access the junction box, remove the lower front panel below the operator-side controls. The panel is attached with 8 mm hex-head screws. Make electrical connections at the terminal block in the electrical junction box. Electrical and grounding connections must comply with applicable electrical and local codes. In Canada, the manual specifies local codes and the Canadian Electrical Code, CSA C22.1, latest edition. In the United States, it specifies state and local codes and the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70, latest edition.
Before first use
Before cleaning and preparing the case, disconnect electrical power and follow lockout/tagout procedures. Clean, sanitize, rinse and dry the case and its interior parts and accessories. The manual then calls for a 30-minute burn-in at the maximum temperature settings to release odors that may result from heating new surfaces. Smoke with an unpleasant odor is described as normal during this burn-in period.
Operation
Power-up and temperature setting
Turn the main power switch on. Turn on the light switch, upper heat switch and lower heat switch as needed for operation. The temperature controller blinks during power-up. Press Set to display the well temperature set point, then quickly press Up or Down to adjust it within the stated range of 149°F to 185°F. After three seconds, the display returns to the actual well temperature. The heater output indicator lights while the unit preheats and indicates when the heaters cycle on during normal operation.
The selected temperature setting is stored in memory. It remains stored until the operator reprograms it, including through a power interruption, disconnection or shutdown.
Preheating and loading
Allow the case to preheat for 30 to 60 minutes. Keep all doors closed during preheating so the unit can preheat properly, and verify that the display case reaches the proper temperature. Open the sliding glass doors to load packaged food. Keep them closed except when loading product. After loading, return the sliding wire shelf fully toward the sliding doors.
End-of-day shutdown
Turn off the upper heat switch, lower heat switch and light switch, then turn the main power switch off.
Cleaning & Maintenance
The manual directs operators to clean the case at the end of the day after use. The case and its parts may be hot: use care when operating, cleaning or servicing. Disconnect electrical power and follow lockout/tagout procedures before cleaning or maintenance. Do not use oven cleaners or clean the case with a high-pressure hose.
Interior and glass
Raise the customer-side front glass; it stays up on its own. Clean the interior stainless steel surfaces with warm water and detergent, then rinse and wipe dry with a soft cloth. For glass cleaning, remove the clear glass protector strips from the sliding doors and front glass. Clean the door glass handles with warm water and detergent, rinse and wipe dry with a soft cloth. Clean the glass with warm water and detergent, then rinse and dry, or use a commercial glass cleaner. Replace the protector strips after cleaning.
Exterior and stainless steel care
Clean the control panel with a sponge or soft cloth. Excessive water and harsh cleaners can damage the control panel. Clean the exterior with warm water and detergent using a soft cloth or sponge, rinse thoroughly and wipe dry with a soft cloth.
To protect stainless steel, avoid abrasive steel pads, wire brushes and scrapers, which can leave iron deposits. Use plastic scouring pads or soft cloths instead, and rub parallel to the polish lines or with the grain. Remove food deposits through cleaning. Use mild detergent and non-chloride cleaners, rinse thoroughly and wipe dry. If using a chloride-containing cleaner or sanitizer, rinse repeatedly. The manual notes that hard-water mineral deposits can promote rust and that treated water from softeners or certain filters can eliminate these deposits. It also names Cameo, Talc and Zud First Impression for stubborn stains, and Benefit or Super Sheen as examples of stainless steel polish.
Service
For repairs or adjustments, the manual directs operators to contact a local Hobart service office. It lists 1-888-4HOBART for information about long-term service contracts.
