About the Hobart HHTC8
Overview
The Hobart HHTC8 is the 8-foot model in Hobart’s HHTC series of two-tier, self-service deli display cases. It holds hot food products at regulated temperatures. The case combines stainless steel with clear or mirrored tempered glass, and electronic temperature regulation controls the well heat and air stream. An opening on the customer side lets customers reach in for self-service.
The HHTC8 can be placed beside other HHTC-series cases to create a serving line or display configuration. The related HHTC4 and HHTC6 are other sizes in the series; the capacity and electrical information below is for the HHTC8.
Key Features
- Two-tier display: Provides a lower well and an upper tier for hot food products.
- Self-service access: Customers reach products through the opening on the customer side.
- Electronic temperature regulation: Controls well heat and the air stream. The well temperature controller stores its programmed set point in memory, including through a power interruption, disconnection, or shutdown.
- Glass and stainless steel construction: The series manual describes stainless steel and clear or mirrored tempered glass.
- Sliding glass doors: The operator side has sliding doors for loading packaged food; the manual instructs operators to keep them closed except when loading.
- Separate heat and light controls: Main power, upper heat, lower heat, and lights are controlled by switches.

Installation & Requirements
Before installation, check that the electrical service agrees with the specifications on the machine data plate, located on the operator side of the display case. The manual provides two electrical configurations for the HHTC8: 120/240 V, 60 Hz, single phase, or 120/208 V, 60 Hz, three phase. It lists 45.3 and a 50 maximum protective device for the first configuration, and 29.7 and a 40 maximum protective device for the second. Confirm the unit’s data plate and applicable electrical requirements for the specific installation.
To access the junction box, remove the lower front panel below the controls on the operator side; the panel is attached with 8 mm hex-head screws. Make electrical connections to the terminal block in the junction box. Electrical and grounding connections must comply with applicable electrical codes. In Canada, the manual specifies local codes and the Canadian Electrical Code, CSA C22.1. In the United States, it specifies state and local codes and the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70. The manual does not state a clearance dimension.
For initial use, the manual calls for cleaning, sanitizing, rinsing, and drying the case and its parts and accessories, then operating it at maximum temperature settings for 30 minutes to burn in the new heated surfaces. Smoke with an unpleasant odour may normally occur during this period.
Operation
Starting and setting the case
- Turn the main power switch on. The temperature controller blinks during power-up.
- Turn on the light switch, upper heat switch, and lower heat switch as required for operation.
- To view the well temperature set point, press Set. Quickly press Up or Down to adjust it within the stated 149 to 185°F range.
- After 3 seconds, the display returns to the actual well temperature. The heater output indicator lights while the unit preheats and shows when heaters cycle on and off during normal operation.
Allow the case to preheat for 30 to 60 minutes. The manual states that all doors must be closed for proper preheating. Verify the case temperature before loading food.
Loading and shutdown
Open the sliding glass doors to load packaged food. Keep the doors closed unless loading products. After loading, return the sliding wire shelf fully toward the sliding doors. At the end of the day, turn off the upper heat switch, lower heat switch, and light switch, then turn off the main power switch.
Cleaning & Maintenance
The case and its parts are hot during operation. Use care when operating, cleaning, or servicing. Before maintenance or cleaning that requires access to the equipment, disconnect electrical power and follow lockout/tagout procedures. Clean the case at the end of the day after use. Do not use oven cleaners or clean with a high-pressure hose. Excessive water and harsh cleaners can damage the control panel.
Interior and glass
- Raise the front glass on the customer side to clean the interior; the glass stays up on its own. Clean the interior stainless steel surfaces with warm water and detergent, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth.
- Remove the clear glass protector strips from the sliding doors and front glass before cleaning those surfaces.
- Clean door glass handles with warm water and detergent, rinse, and dry with a soft cloth. Clean glass with warm water and detergent, then rinse and dry, or use a commercial glass cleaner.
- Replace the clear protector strips on the sliding doors and front glass after cleaning.
Exterior and stainless steel
Clean the control panel with a sponge or soft cloth. Clean the exterior with warm water and detergent using a soft cloth or sponge, then rinse thoroughly and wipe dry with a soft cloth.
For stainless steel, the manual warns against abrasion from steel pads, wire brushes, or scrapers, which can leave iron deposits; use plastic scouring pads or soft cloths instead. For stubborn stains, it names Cameo, Talc, or Zud First Impression and says to rub parallel to the polish lines or with the grain. Hard-water and food deposits should be removed; the manual notes that treated water from softeners or certain filters can eliminate mineral deposits. Use mild detergent and nonchloride cleaners, rinse thoroughly, and wipe dry. If using chloride-containing cleaners or sanitizers, rinse repeatedly to help avoid corrosion. The manual also names Benefit and Super Sheen as examples of stainless-steel polishes.
Troubleshooting
- Case will not operate or controller is blank: Check incoming power and fuses, replacing fuses with the same size and type. Confirm the main power and lower heat switches are on. If the problem remains, call Hobart service.
- Controller displays --- or EEE: Call Hobart service.
- No well heat: Check incoming power and fuses, replacing fuses with the same size and type. Confirm the main power and lower heat switches are on. If the problem remains, call Hobart service.
- No upper heat: Confirm the upper heat switch is on. If there is still no upper heat, call Hobart service.
- Lights are off while the controller functions: Confirm the light switch is on and check the fuse, replacing it with the same size and type. If the problem remains, call Hobart service.
The maintenance section directs operators to contact a local Hobart service office for repairs or adjustments.
Applications
The HHTC8 is suited to commercial food-service counters that need a self-service display for hot deli products. Its two tiers let an operator arrange packaged hot foods for customer access, while the sliding doors provide access for loading.
