About the Hobart CL54-DWR
Overview
The Hobart CL54-DWR is a CL-Series conveyor dishwasher for commercial kitchens that need a continuous rack-washing workflow. A seller lists a capacity of 245 racks per hour and water consumption of 0.47 gallon per rack. Hobart’s CL-Series information describes the family as serving medium- and high-volume operations, with listed family throughput ranging from 202 to 342 racks per hour; the specific CL54-DWR listing gives the more relevant figure of 245 racks per hour.
The CL54-DWR is identified as a high/low-temperature convertible model. The manual specifies hot-water sanitizing for CL-DWR models. Product listings identify stainless steel construction and ENERGY STAR® qualification. The model’s drain water tempering system is factory installed on CL-DWR machines, according to the manual.

Installation & Requirements
Water supply
The manual states that CL-DWR models require both hot- and cold-water supplies. For CL-DWR models with a built-in 24 kW booster, the incoming-water table lists cold water at a minimum of 55°F and a maximum of 80°F, and hot water at a minimum of 110°F. The incoming line must have a minimum inside diameter of 1/2 inch. In its troubleshooting instructions, the manual gives an incoming water pressure range of 20–65 psi for tank filling.
The manual states that the drain water tempering kit is factory installed on CL-DWR models. The common tank drain needs one connection to the floor drain and can be connected at either end; a plug is provided for the opposite end. Connect the drain through a trap to the sewer using 2-inch NPT pipe. Where a grease trap is required by code, the manual specifies a minimum flow capacity of 38 gallons per minute. For CL-DWR models, the factory drain plumbing may need to be moved to the opposite side of the drain body, depending on the connection layout.
Drain, tables and setup
The manual advises positioning the dishwasher at its intended location and confirming that it is at the correct height and level before assembling tables and plumbing. It specifies applying silicone between the dish table and the tank lip to prevent leaks. Tables should slope so water from the dishwasher returns toward the machine, rather than water from the scrap area. Splash shields are supplied with CL models other than CL-VL; the manual says to install them inside the rolled table edge to help prevent water from running onto the floor.
Electrical and heat configuration
A seller listing gives 208 volts and 30 kW, while another listing describes single-phase voltage as installation-specific. These seller details do not establish that every CL54-DWR has the same electrical configuration. Verify the machine’s data plate and selected heat option before planning the connection. Hobart’s search listing identifies electric and steam specification sheets for the CL54-DWR.
The manual also provides gas information for CL54 machines when equipped with gas tank heat. In that conditional configuration, it lists natural or propane gas, 78,000 BTU/hr, and a 1/2-inch NPT connection. Machines are shipped configured for natural gas; an LP conversion kit must be installed before propane operation. The manual gives flowing gas pressure ranges of 3.5–7.0 inches water column for natural gas and 9.0–11.0 inches water column for propane, with manifold pressures of 3.2 and 8.2 inches water column respectively. Gas-heated machines require a means to exhaust flue gases to the exterior. These gas details apply only if the machine is equipped with gas tank heat.
Operation
Before operation, the manual instructs the operator to make sure the dishwasher is clean and all parts are in place. Install the standpipe or standpipes in the tank or tanks. Fit the strainer pan and scrap basket, then install the upper and lower wash arms with their sliders in the closed position. Push each arm onto its connector pipe so its opposite end is held by the guide, then lift or lower it into position.
If the machine is equipped with a scrapper, install its standpipe in the first tank where the rack enters. The standpipe with strainer belongs in that first tank. Install the scrapper’s rear and side strainer pans and lower the scrap basket into place; fit the scrapper wash arms using the same closed-slider position described in the manual.
The troubleshooting chart notes that a machine may stop after its auto-timer times out; press START or insert a rack. If the machine is in Energy Saver Mode, press WASH on the HMI to resume. A wash can also be interrupted if a door is opened during operation; close the door or doors.
Cleaning & Maintenance
The supplied manual excerpt does not provide a complete routine cleaning schedule or maintenance interval. It does specify that the machine should be clean and all parts in place before operation, and identifies the standpipes, strainers, scrap basket and wash arms as components to position during preparation. The manual also cautions that plumbing debris from soldering or cutting can lodge in dishwasher plumbing and interfere with operation; its installation instructions call for keeping such debris out of the water lines.
Troubleshooting
Machine does not operate
The manual lists these possible causes: a blown fuse or tripped supply breaker; an inspection door left open; a jammed conveyor; the auto-timer timing out; a tripped table limit switch, if one is fitted; or Energy Saver Mode. Its suggested checks include closing the inspection doors, clearing the conveyor jam, pressing START or inserting a rack after a timer timeout, and pressing WASH to resume from Energy Saver Mode. Electrical faults should be handled with the power disconnected and appropriate lockout/tagout procedures.
Dishes are not clean
The manual lists insufficient wash water, a drain obstruction that leaves the drain open, a worn or torn drain O-ring, wash-arm sliders left open, obstructed wash-arm nozzles, a worn or torn manifold O-ring, pump obstructions that reduce water pressure, and incorrect water temperature as possible causes. For a suspected pump obstruction, it directs the operator to disconnect electrical power, follow lockout/tagout procedures, drain the tank or tanks and check the pump intake. The manual also directs operators to check the electric heat supply breaker, main steam valve or gas supply valve, as applicable, when investigating incorrect water temperature.
Fill and water-level errors
For errors 020 and 023, the display reports that tank fill time has been exceeded. The manual says to confirm that the drain is closed, the incoming water supply is on and the fill hose is not kinked; it gives a pressure check of 20–65 psi. For error 018, the wash-tank water level is too high: check for drain obstructions and drain the machine. If the error continues or the machine cannot drain, contact Hobart Service. Pressure-sensor faults identified by errors 016 and 017 also require service.
Temperature, heater and sensor errors
For final-rinse temperature errors 083 and 084, the manual says the rinse temperature did not reach its minimum within the set time. Press ENTER to clear error 083; for error 084, press ENTER to clear the error and the machine will turn off. Contact Hobart Service if either error persists. Errors 085 and 086 indicate a wash-tank or booster overtemperature trip and call for service. For errors 088 and 089, the wash-tank or booster heater remains on despite the software command to turn it off: turn off the machine circuit breaker or breakers, do not drain the machine, and contact service. The manual also lists power-rinse tank pressure and temperature sensor errors, and drain-water-tempering sensor errors 102 and 103; these call for service, with the DWT errors also allowing the DWT function to be disabled in the manager menu if that assembly is not installed.
Other listed error
Error 234 means an external conveyor is not ready because it is off, has an error or is not connected. Check that the external conveyor has power and no errors. If the problem remains, contact Hobart Service.
Applications
With its listed 245-rack-per-hour capacity, the CL54-DWR is suited to commercial dishrooms that process racks continuously, such as restaurant, hotel, institutional and cafeteria kitchens. Confirm that the available space, water connections and machine-specific power and heat configuration suit the planned dishroom installation.
