About the Hobart CL44-BAS
Overview
The Hobart CL44-BAS is a high-temperature rack conveyor dishwasher for commercial dishrooms that need continuous rack washing. Its stated NSF-rated capacity is 202 racks per hour, with a conveyor speed of 5.6 feet per minute. The machine has a single 23-gallon wash tank and a 19.5-inch standard chamber opening. Hobart states that this opening can accommodate up to six standard sheet pans at a time when loaded on an open-end sheet pan rack.
The specifications cover electric, gas and steam tank-heat configurations. Utility connections, incoming-water temperatures and electrical ratings differ by configuration, so the applicable spec sheet and machine data plate should be used to identify the requirements for a particular unit. The electric spec sheet lists ENERGY STAR certification. Hobart's specifier statement describes the configurable pot-and-pan cycle as NSF approved, with approval noted as pending in that document.

Installation & Requirements
Water and drain connections
The CL-BAS requires one incoming hot-water supply. The manual specifies a minimum 1/2-inch inside diameter for the incoming water line. The spec sheets state that building water pressure at the machine must be 20 to 65 PSI. The common hot-water connection is 1/2-inch FPT at 12 inches above the finished floor. The drain is 2-inch FPT at 7-3/8 inches above the finished floor; it can connect at either end of the drain housing, with the unused end plugged. The manual says the common tank drain connects through a trap to the sewer using 2-inch NPT pipe. If a grease trap is required by code, the manual specifies a minimum flow capacity of 38 gallons per minute.
Incoming-water temperature depends on the sanitizing and booster configuration. The manual table lists 180°F minimum and 194°F maximum for hot-water sanitizing on a CL-BAS without a built-in booster; 120°F minimum for chemical sanitizing without a built-in booster; 140°F minimum with a 12 kW built-in booster; and 110°F minimum with an 18 kW built-in booster for the CL44. A drain-water-tempering kit is an accessory for CL-BAS models and requires an additional cold-water supply when installed. The spec sheets recommend water hardness of 3 grains or less and call for a water hammer arrestor in the common supply line.
Electrical, gas and steam connections
Electrical ratings depend on the heat configuration and connection arrangement. For the steam-heat sheet's single-point connection with an 18 kW booster, listed supplies are 208/60/3 at 64.6 rated amps with an 80-amp minimum supply circuit ampacity/maximum protective device; 240/60/3 at 57.0 amps with 70 amps; and 480/60/3 at 30.2 amps with 40 amps. For the gas-heat sheet with an 18 kW booster and single-point connection, the listed supplies are 208/60/3 at 65.5 amps with 80 amps, and 240/60/3 at 57.6 amps with 70 amps. The gas and steam sheets also describe dual-point connection ratings. The dishmachine is not provided with internal GFCI protection. Electrical and grounding connections must comply with applicable electrical codes.
For gas tank heat, the CL44-BAS gas spec sheet lists 78,000 BTU per hour and a 1/2-inch FPT gas connection. It lists natural gas at 3.5 to 7 inches water column and LP gas at 8 to 11 inches water column at the customer connection. Gas exhaust must be installed according to local code; gas-heated machines require exhaust of flue gases to the exterior, and combustion and ventilation air must not be obstructed. The gas spec sheet provides an electrical interlock connection for a customer airflow switch to prevent heat application when exhaust fans are not operating.
For steam tank heat, the spec sheet lists a 3/4-inch FPT steam connection at 10 to 50 PSI flowing pressure. The condensate return is 3/4-inch FPT; a 10 PSI minimum differential pressure across the steam trap must be maintained. The sheet says flowing steam pressure above 50 PSI requires a pressure regulator supplied by others.
Venting and listed options
Optional vent hoods are listed in standard, short and extended lengths. The spec sheets give minimum vent rates of 200 CFM at the load end and 400 CFM at the unload end for the optional vent hoods. Other listed options include a non-booster configuration, direct-drive unloader, side loader, blower-dryer, drain-water-tempering kit, flanged feet, table limit switch, correctional package, water hammer arrester and factory-mounted circuit breakers. These are options or accessories, not standard components unless specified in the order.
Operation
Before operation, the CL Series manual instructs the operator to make sure the dishwasher is clean and all parts are in place. Where a scrapper is fitted, the standpipe with strainer goes in the first tank where the rack enters. Install the rear and side strainer pans and lower the scrap basket. Fit the upper and lower wash arms with their sliders closed, pushing each arm onto its connector pipe and positioning the opposite end in its guide. For wash and rinse tanks, install the standpipe or standpipes, the strainer pan and scrap basket, then fit the wash arms with their sliders closed.
The manual identifies several reasons the machine may not operate: a blown fuse or tripped supply circuit breaker, an open inspection door, a jammed conveyor, an Auto-Timer that has timed out, a tripped table limit switch if one is used, or Energy Saver Mode. The listed responses include pushing START or inserting a rack after the timer has timed out, and pressing WASH on the touchscreen to resume from Energy Saver Mode.
Cleaning & Maintenance
The provided manual excerpt gives a pre-operation cleanliness check and component-placement instructions but does not provide a complete cleaning schedule or maintenance interval. It identifies service diagnostics, touchscreen troubleshooting and SmartConnect error-code reporting as features of the machine. For cleaning access, Hobart lists a large double-door opening and a single sloping scrap screen with a deep scrap basket. The manual also calls for disconnecting electrical power and following lockout/tagout procedures before checking a pump intake for obstructions; it warns that there may be multiple circuits and that all circuits must be disconnected.
Troubleshooting
Machine does not operate
- Check for a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker at the power supply.
- Check that inspection doors are closed.
- Check whether the conveyor is jammed.
- If the Auto-Timer timed out, push START or insert a rack.
- If a table limit switch is installed, check whether it has tripped.
- If the machine is in Energy Saver Mode, press WASH on the touchscreen.
Dishes are not clean
The manual lists insufficient wash water; a drain obstruction causing an open-drain condition; a worn or torn drain O-ring; wash-arm sliders left open; obstructed wash-arm nozzles; a worn or torn manifold O-ring; and loss of water pressure from pump obstructions as possible causes. For a suspected pump obstruction, it instructs the operator to disconnect power, use lockout/tagout, drain the tank or tanks and check the pump intake. Incorrect water temperature is another listed cause; the manual directs the operator to check the electric-heating circuit breaker, main steam valve or gas supply valve as applicable.
Selected touchscreen errors
- 018, wash tank water level too high: Check the drain for obstructions and drain the machine. Contact Hobart Service if the error persists or the machine cannot be drained.
- 020, tank fill time exceeded: Ensure the drain is closed, the water supply is on and the fill hose is not kinked; verify water pressure is 20 to 65 PSI, drain the machine and try filling again. Contact service if the error persists.
- 023, tank water level did not increase: Check that the drain is closed and the incoming water supply is on, that the fill hose is not kinked, and that water pressure is 20 to 65 PSI. Contact service if the error persists.
- 029, wash interrupted: The manual identifies a door opened during machine operation; close the door or doors.
- 083 and 084, final rinse temperature too low: The rinse temperature did not reach its minimum within the set time. Press ENTER to clear the error; for 084, the wash cycle stops and the machine turns off. Contact service if the error persists.
- 085 and 086, wash-tank or booster over-temperature: Contact Hobart Service.
- 088 and 089, wash-tank or booster contactor error: Turn off the machine circuit breaker or breakers, do not drain the machine, and contact Hobart Service.
- 016 and 017, wash-tank pressure-sensor failure: The manual describes short- or open-circuit sensor conditions and directs the operator to contact service.
